FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa men's soccer (2-5, 1-3 GLVC) struggled against Truman State (Mo.) (2-4-1, 1-4 GLVC) in a 3-1 loss. Gerardo Romo highlights the Peacocks' offense with his first career goal.
The Bulldogs struck first during the ninth minute of the game. Truman State's Nathan Grewe received the ball at the left side of the goal off a throw-in and then set the ball up for Oliver Doyle. Doyle kicked the ball off his left foot towards the bottom right side of the goal to make the score, 1-0.
UIU did not stay silent for long. In the 29th minute of the game, Alejandro Sanchez steered the ball from midfield towards the center of the goal to set up Romo. With two defenders surrounding him, Romo split the ball between them and shot it off his right foot past the goalkeeper into the bottom left of the goal, 1-1.
As the half was ending, the Bulldogs took the lead, 2-1. Jacob Panagos kicked the ball backwards off his right foot and set the ball where Thomas Edrington pushed the ball past the Peacocks' defenders, right by the lower right side of the net.
Truman St. stretched their lead to 3-1 in the 53rd minute of the game. Drake Thompson shot the ball towards the top left of the net off a throw-in and scored.
Upper Iowa attempted to respond with several shots and a goalkick by Sanchez. However, the Bulldogs' stout defense helped them secure the win.
Romo recorded the Peacocks' lone goal. Julian Mesen and Sanchez led the team in shots with four, followed by Romo with three. Sanchez tallied the only assist on the day.
Upper Iowa outshot Truman St. 16-13 in the game, while taking 10 shots in the second half. UIU also led in fouls, 9-7, and corner kicks, 9-6.
The Peacocks will stay home next week. The first match is against William Jewell (Mo.) (2-5, 1-3 GLVC) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and then Rockhurst (Mo.) (4-2-1, 3-0-1 GLVC) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
