Peacocks' second-half surge leads to draw with Cardinals

Sanchez scores his first two goals of the season

FAYETTE, Iowa – UIU men's soccer (2-5-1, 1-3-1 GLVC) drew a 3-3 match with William Jewell (2-5-1, 1-3-2 GLVC) on Friday night. Alejandro Sanchez scored his first two goals of the season and totaled five shots on the night.

The Peacocks came out firing and took a 1-0 lead in the third minute off a goal by Sanchez. After a few missed shots by Upper Iowa, Sanchez followed them up by placing the ball toward the front left of the goal. He struck it with his right foot into the upper right corner of the net.

The Cardinals evened the score at 1-1 just fifteen seconds later with a goal by Zach Nichols. Nolan Piedimonte and Giorgios Eleftheriou were credited with assists.

William Jewell then extended its lead to 2-1 with a goal by Alexis Ibarra, which came after a save by Noah Nymark-Pedersen. WJC pushed the lead to 3-1 after a UIU foul in the 22nd minute allowed Nichols to score his second goal of the game.

Upper Iowa mounted a second-half comeback. In the 68th minute, Sanchez lined up on the left side of the pitch, about 10 yards out, and took a free kick that curled from the center to the bottom left corner, just past the goalkeeper's fingertips, making it 3-2.

In the final minutes, Dexter Garrett executed a bicycle kick to send the ball back toward Julian Mesen. Mesen controlled it on the right side of the pitch and set up Timur Nagy, who fired a high shot that deflected off the goalkeeper's hands barely past the goal line, tying the game at 3-3.

Sanchez led the team with two goals, five shots total and four shots on goal. Nagy recorded his second goal of the season. Garrett, Romo and Mesen each had one assist.

Both teams had 13 shots. William Jewell had more corner kicks, 7-6, while Upper Iowa led in fouls, 16-14.

UIU continues its home stretch with a matchup against Rockhurst (5-2-2, 4-0-2 GLVC) this Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
