Upper Iowa men’s soccer falls to Quincy after a stifling defensive first half

Sanchez totals four shots and two on goal in 3-0 loss

FAYETTE, Iowa - UIU men's soccer (2-4, 1-2 GLVC) fell to Quincy (5-1-1, 3-1 GLVC) after allowing three goals in the second half despite a great defensive shutout in the first half. Alejandro Sanchez totaled four shots and two shots on goal in the 3-0 loss.

The Peacocks played strong defense in the first half, holding Quincy to zero shots on goal. Sanchez, Abraham Navarro and James Moody each tallied shots for UIU.

The defense stayed firm for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but Quincy broke through in the 64th minute. Carlos Moreno Henao worked the ball up the left side and set up Leo Cann, who scored past Noah Nymark-Pedersen for a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks struck again in the 75th minute. Josh Nwosu connected off the top of his foot in front of the goalie's box to push the lead to 2-0.

UIU had a chance to respond in the 78th minute after Jeremiah Goko drew a foul. Sanchez took the penalty kick, but his shot missed off the top right of the crossbar.

Quincy put the match away in the 85th minute. Mathias Bringedal advanced the ball up the left side before Moreno Henao finished with a shot into the bottom-left corner, sealing the 3-0 win.

Moody matched Sanchez for the most shots with four, followed by Navarro with three. Sanchez and Navarro each had two shots on goal, while Moody and Timur Nagy notched one shot on goal.

The Peacocks ended the game with more shots than the Hawks, 18-17. UIU had fewer saves in the game, with one compared to Quincy's six. Upper Iowa ended with more fouls in the match, 15-12.
