Peacocks prepare for homecoming bout vs. Blue Tigers

Upper Iowa opens GLVC play on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Harms-Eischeid Stadium

FAYETTE, Iowa - The Upper Iowa football team (2-1, 0-0 GLVC) welcomes Lincoln (Mo.) (2-1, 0-1 GLVC) to town for the Peacocks in Paradise Homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Harms-Eischeid Stadium.

HALL OF FAME CEREMONY
Upper Iowa will induct Derek Oelmann (2012), Chris Smith (2015) and Cole Jaeschke (2014) into the Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend. All Hall of Fame members in attendance at Saturday's football game will be recognized on the field at halftime and a special tribute to the Harms family will take place prior to the second half kickoff.

Oelmann is the men's soccer program's first Hall of Fame inductee and the program's all-time leader in goals scored (44) and points (102), earning all-region honors three times. 

Smith and Jaeschke played together and led the Peacock football team to 12 wins in their final two years and a pair of winning seasons for the first time in 15 years. Smith, who is the all-time leader in rushing with 4,347 yards and touchdowns with 45, earned three All-NSIC honors, including the NSIC Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman and three all-region selections. Jaeschke, who holds 11 UIU passing records, including all-time passing leader with 11,714 yards, earned three All-NSIC honors.

LAST TIME OUT
The Peacocks defeated No. 24 Michigan Tech, 21-14, this past Saturday. Upper Iowa scored all 21 points in the second quarter and overcame three turnovers to beat the Huskies. This marked the first top 25 win for the program since 2018 (No. 11 Winona State). 

Upper Iowa only allowed Michigan Tech to pass for 89 yards and outgained the Huskies 345-208 overall. Yashua Pettis-Taylor made a key play in the fourth quarter with a tackle-for-loss on a fourth-and-1 from the UIU eight-yard line. He had five tackles and two tackles-for-loss.

Tade Parsons led the Peacocks with nine tackles (eight solo). Shaquille Roman tallied six tackles (four solo), a sack, two tackles-for-loss and two breakups. Evan Dorn added a sack. 

The offense turned the ball over on the first two possessions of the game. After that, the Peacocks scored three straight touchdowns through the air to Mante Morrow, Eddie Burgess and Logan Rosauer

Senior quarterback Darryl Overstreet Jr. led the offense with 246 all-purpose yards (205 passing, 41 rushing). He completed 26-of-35 (74.2%) passes and was 12-of-15 (80%) for 96 passing yards in the second quarter. 

Damon Head Jr. was UIU's leading rusher with 71 yards on 18 carries. Morrow led the team in receiving with 74 yards on six catches. Burgess added 46 yards on five catches, and Angelo Butts had 40 yards on six catches. 

STATISTICS SUMMARY
Overstreet Jr. is 65-of-90 (72.22%) this season with 785 passing yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions. He has the sixth-best completion percentage in the nation and the second-best in the GLVC. Quincy's (Ill.) Bradyn Little is the national leader with a 73.9% completion percentage. 

The senior quarterback has a 174.0 passing efficiency rating, which leads the GLVC and ranks 11th in the nation. His nine passing touchdowns are the second most in the GLVC and the 12th most nationally. He also ranks fourth in the conference in total passing yards. 

Through three games, Morrow has 19 catches for 375 yards and six touchdowns. He leads the GLVC in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Nationally, Morrow ranks second in receiving touchdowns, third in receiving yards per game (125), eighth in total points scored (36) and 10th in total receiving yards. 

Head Jr. leads the team in rushing yards with 145 on 33 carries and a touchdown. He's tied for eighth in the GLVC in rushing yards. Overstreet Jr. is the team's second-highest rusher with 34 yards. 

Defensively, Parsons leads the Peacocks with 19 tackles (14 solo). He's tied for 10th in the GLVC in solo tackles. Darrell Matchem has 18 tackles (12 solo), and Evan Dorn has 17 tackles (nine solo). 

AROUND THE GLVC
Every other team in the GLVC started conference play last weekend. UIndy, Quincy, Southwest Baptist (Mo.) and Truman State (Mo.) picked up victories over McKendree (Ill.), Lincoln (Mo.), William Jewell (Ill.) and Missouri S&T, respectively. 

UIndy (3-1, 1-0 GLVC) became the first team in the conference to pick up three wins with its victory over McKendree (0-3, 0-1 GLVC). The Greyhounds returned to the AFCA Coaches' Poll this week, ranked No. 22. The Peacocks were the only other team to receive a vote in the Coaches' Poll. 

This week, UIndy takes on Truman State (2-2, 1-0 GLVC) in Kirksville, Missouri. The Greyhounds and the Bulldogs were picked as the top two teams in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll. 

ABOUT THE BLUE TIGERS
Lincoln started the season with a 55-6 win over Lincoln (Calif.) and a 27-15 win over Lane (Tenn.) (0-3). The Blue Tigers almost overcame a 14-0 early deficit to Quincy (2-1, 1-0 GLVC) this past Saturday, but fell 24-21. 

Sophomore quarterback Isaiah Tate is 32-for-50 with 496 yards and five touchdowns. He's also thrown three interceptions. Tate has thrown for the eighth-most yards in the GLVC and has the fourth-highest completion percentage. 

Senior JaDarrius Thomas and sophomore Jareese Howard lead the team in rushing with 132 yards each. Howard has two rushing touchdowns, and Thomas has one. 

Junior receiver Marcus Harris is the team's receiving leader with six catches for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Jaden Holloway has emerged for the Blue Tigers with 12 catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. 

Defensively, senior linebacker Jordan Hoskins is the team's leader in tackles with 18 (seven solo). Defensive lineman Michael Allen and defensive back Nate Harden both have 12 tackles. 

Lincoln is 15th in the nation in total sacks with 10. Sophomore defensive tackle Jacob McGhee leads the team with three this season. Upper Iowa has not allowed a sack in the last two games.

Head coach Moses Harper is in his second season with the program. He has a 3-11 record with Lincoln entering this week's game. 

LAST SEASON'S MATCHUP WITH THE BLUE TIGERS
The Peacocks defeated Lincoln, 31-3, last October in Jefferson City, Missouri. Upper Iowa jumped on Lincoln early, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter. The Peacocks held the Blue Tigers to 60 yards rushing while totaling 151 yards on the ground themselves.

Overstreet Jr. was 14-of-22 (63.6%) with 202 yards, one touchdown and an interception. RJ Wells and Jayden Mitchell each had a rushing touchdown. Morrow, Master Brooks and Cam Williams each had 40 receiving yards, with Morrow catching a touchdown. 

Rhett Smith was a monster defensively, totaling three sacks. Demontay Mack added two sacks of his own. Roman forced and recovered a fumble. Michael Mulherin led the Peacocks with nine total tackles.
