Alexa Garcia’s season debut aids Peacock GLVC-opening draw

Junior scores a goal with a team-high three shots in 1-1 tie with UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS - The Peacock women's soccer team (2-1-2, 0-0-1 GLVC) opened GLVC play with a draw against UIndy (0-2-2, 0-1-1 GLVC). Upper Iowa was outshot 20-4, but made the most of its opportunities to get the tie.

Junior midfielder Giovanna Alexa Garcia made the most of her first minutes of action this season. She led the team with three shots and scored the lone goal of the game for Upper Iowa.

UIndy's Nicole Schroeder gave the Greyhounds an early lead in the 20th minute. She knocked in a goal over the outstretched arm of UIU goalkeeper Sienna Johnson in the top of the net. This was Johnson's first goal she's given up in 204 minutes of action.

Alexa Garcia responded in the 40th minute of play. After an errant UIndy pass, she knocked in a left-footed goal to the upper middle of the net. This marked the first goal of her career and she had only recorded one shot in the last two seasons.

The second half was scoreless, but featured opportunities for both teams. With 17 minutes left, UIndy's Antiya Sidibe hit a good look off the crossbar. A corner kick on the following possession created a shot for Rochelle Maxson out of play over the net.

Alexa Garcia had back-to-back opportunities within the final two minutes of the game. Her first shot was saved by UIndy goalkeeper Maria White, and her second one went out over the net. That was White's only save of the game.

Johnson totaled seven saves in the match, with four in the first half and three in the second half. Rhea Buchanan added UIU's only other shot of the game. Stephany Castillo, Myriah Roybal, Natalie Lima and Buchanan played all 90 minutes.

The Greyhounds outshot the Peacocks 12-2 in the first half and 8-2 in the second half. UIndy had 16 corner kicks compared to two for Upper Iowa. UIU committed nine fouls while UIndy committed seven. The Greyhounds had the game's only yellow card.

Upper Iowa is back home on Sunday against Lewis (Ill.) (1-0-3, 0-0-1 GLVC). Kickoff is scheduled for noon at Harms-Eischeid Stadium.
