Ritter gets first win with Peacocks after Buchanan’s 86th-minute goal

Freshman scores her second goal of the season to give Peacocks 1-0 victory over Mustangs

MARSHALL, Minn. - Head women's soccer coach Patrick Ritter picked up his first win with the program in Friday's matchup against Southwest Minnesota State (0-1-1). Freshman Rhea Buchanan knocked in her second goal of the season in the 86th minute to give the Peacocks (1-1-1) the 1-0 win.

The goal started when Buchanan cleared the ball at UIU's end of the field. After some back-and-forth on the clear, Jessica Ancheta found Haylie Hutchinson at midfield. Hutchinson then made a beautiful pass up to Buchanan at the 15-yard line, who knocked it in for the transition score.

This marks back-to-back games scoring for Buchanan. She had the lone goal for the Peacocks on Sunday, Sept. 5, against Roosevelt (Ill.).

Another freshman, Sienna Johnson, shined at goalkeeper. She tallied her second shutout of the season, making four saves. Johnson didn't have to face a single shot in her first shutout against Minnesota Crookston.

The Mustangs outshot the Peacocks, 14-4, with an 8-1 advantage in the first half. SMSU's Kennedy Krebs made three saves in the net. The Peacocks held an advantage in corner kicks, 5-2, while each team had seven fouls.

Maile Kehano, Haylee Allen and Hutchinson each tallied a shot for the Peacocks. Stephany Castillo, Natalie Lima and Myriah Roybal all played the full 90 minutes on defense.

The Peacocks return to Fayette on Sunday, Sept. 12, for an 11 a.m. matchup against Jamestown (N.D.) (0-1) in Harms-Eischeid Stadium. Sunday's game will conclude the four-game nonconference schedule for Upper Iowa.
