Shafer Sets Career Steals Record on Senior Day

Upper Iowa was unable to fend off Illinois Springfield on Senior Day, as the Prairie Stars took game one by a score of 6-1 and game two, 7-4. Prior to the match, Upper Iowa recognized their five Seniors in Reagan Church, Rae VanMilligan, Aubree Terris, Delaney Vetter, and Tristin Doster.

Game One
The Prairie Stars scored six runs on eight hits, while the Peacocks posted one run on six hits. The Prairie Stars opened the game with a single, and they would later score two runs at the top of the first on a Peacock error. Upper Iowa opened the fourth with Doster reaching on an error, and she advanced to second on a single out to right field by Dorothy Ziebell. Addyson Alber would then load the bases, as she made it to first on a successful bunt. Kylie Doty hit an infield grounder down the middle, which brought Doster home on the fielder's choice to make it a 2-1 game. UIS responded with three runs atop the fifth, and they were able to ice the game at 6-1 by adding a run in the sixth.

Serah Shafer and Doty each led the Peacocks with two hits in the game. Doty recorded two singles through the right side while Shafer hit one single, and one triple out to the left center field wall at the bottom of the third. On the mound, Sara Reid pitched a complete game where she struck out six batters.

Game Two
Upper Iowa would improve in game two as they recorded four runs on seven hits, to the Prairie Stars seven runs on 11 hits. The Prairie Stars got off to a 6-0 lead through three innings of action, highlighted by a five-run performance in the second. The Peacocks would then outscore UIS in the final four innings 4-1, where they score two runs in the fourth, and added one run in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Shafer led off the bottom of the first inning, by recording a single down the left side. Shafer would then etch her name into the history books, as she recorded her school-record setting 62nd stolen base of her career. It only took Shafer three seasons to break an 18-year-old record set by set by Jena Kilburg, who recorded 61 steals from 2004-07. Shafer currently has 27 stolen bases on the season, and she added 18 as a sophomore, and 17 during her freshman year.

Terris thrived on her Senior Day as she led the Peacocks with two hits on three at bats, while also recording a team-high two RBIs. Terris recorded a two RBI double out to deep left center at the bottom of the fourth, which brought Doty and VanMilligan home for UIU's first two runs of the game. Terris would later add a single down the left side at the bottom of the sixth, which advanced Reagon Proud into scoring position. Taylor Hamaker would record an RBI single down the middle on the following at bat, as Proud scored Upper Iowa's third run of the game.

Taylor Sedam would open the bottom of the seventh by singling to the left side, but she would be thrown out on a fielder's choice which brought Doster to first. Ziebell added a single to the pitcher to put two on, and an RBI single out to left field by Doty would bring Doster home.

The Peacocks will return conclude the regular season tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 27 as they take on McKendree at 12 and 2 p.m.
