Bearcats Sneak Past the Peacocks in Season Finale

Upper Iowa concluded their 2025 campaign at the Eischeid Softball Complex. The Bearcats got the better of UIU by a score of 9-4 in game one, and 4-3 in game two.

Game One
Serah Shafer opened the bottom of the first with a single to center field and she added another single on a bunt in the third inning. With Shafer on second and two outs, Tristin Doster smacked an RBI single out to right field to put the Peacocks ahead 1-0.

The Bearcats were able to respond with a five-run inning in the fourth, where they recorded a grand slam over the center field wall. They would then extend the lead to 7-2 on the fifth, where they scored on an RBI single and sacrifice fly to center field.

Ella Perkins was walked early into the fifth, and Shafer followed that up with her third hit of the game, on an RBI double out to the right field wall. With runners in scoring position, Taylor Sedam recorded a two RBI double off the left field wall, bringing Perkins and Shafer home to cut the lead to 7-3.

Following a pair of McKendree runs atop the seventh, Shafer scored another run on a fielding error, to close out the game by a score of 9-4. Shafer hit 3-4 in the match, while scoring three runs for the third time this season.

On the mound, Sara Reid pitched her 14th complete game of the year, while striking out five batters.

Game Two
McKendree quickly jumped into the lead in game two, as they posted a two RBI single up the middle with no outs. Shafer would respond by recording her fourth hit of the day, as she singled out to center field. She would then add to her Upper Iowa career steals record, as she stole second on the first pitch. Shafer was able to advance to third on a ground out, and she scored Upper Iowa's opening run on a wild pitch. The Bearcats would add a solo home run to lead off the third, and they pushed their lead to 4-1 on a fourth inning RBI double with two outs. Rae VanMilligan would add a double of her own in the bottom of the fourth, but McKendree would force three consecutive outs to leave her stranded.

Sedam continued to thrive on both ends of the field, as she made a tremendous over the shoulder jumping catch, to record the second out of the fifth inning. She led off the bottom of the fifth by singling through the left side, where she recorded her fourth hit of the day and second of game two. Doster took the opening pitch of the next at bat, and launched a home run over the left field wall that bounced off the top of Upper Iowa's scoreboard. Doster's home run moved her up to third in the GLVC with nine home runs, while her two-run shot cut the lead to 4-3.

Dorothy Ziebell was able to record her second hit of the game with a single through the left side in the seventh, but the Bearcats would force consecutive outs to sneak by with the 4-3 win. Delaney Vetter racked up six strikeouts on the mound for the Peacocks, while pitching a complete game.
