Upper Iowa challenged Quincy in their first conference action of the season, falling in a 4-3 heart breaker at QU Stadium. The Peacocks led 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth but allowed the Hawks to haul in four runs.
UIU had two outs on the board while leading 3-1, but could not find the final two outs to close the game.
Upper Iowa took the lead in the 7th inning when
Thane Meiners reached first on an error by the shortstop, which allowed
Dylan McVeigh to advance to third and
Jared Grams to score an unearned run, putting Upper Iowa ahead 1-0.
In the 9th, Upper Iowa added two more runs to extend their lead. Meiners reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in Grams to make it 2-0. Shortly after, a passed ball allowed Meiners to move to second, and
Jared Hoodjer scored to increase Upper Iowa's advantage to 3-0.
However, Quincy mounted a thrilling rally in the bottom of the 9th. They started the momentum with a solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Hawks continued to battle back, as they singled to second base, driving in two runs, tying the game at 3-3.
QU's comeback was completed when they reached first on an error by the Peacocks, allowing a runner to advance to second and a runner to score the game-winning unearned run, securing a 4-3 victory for Quincy.
The Hawks capitalized on key mistakes and timely hits in the 9th inning to come from behind and win.
Grams led the team at the plate with two hits.
Upper Iowa's pitching staff was led by
Brady Stevens, who threw for five innings, allowing four hits and no runs, while striking out seven batters.
Tyler Glowacki followed with three innings of relief, giving up one hit, no runs, and recording three strikeouts.
JJ Vargas, who took the loss, pitched 0.2 innings, allowing four hits and four runs (three earned).
The Peacocks are back in action tomorrow against the Hawks in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
