Peacocks See First Conference Win in Split With Hawks

Peacock baseball picked up its first conference win after earning a split with Quincy. They dropped game one 9-5 but bounced back to take game two 6-5. UIU moved to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the league. The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with one final game at 12 p.m.

Gunnar Wicklund was the highlight of the afternoon as he recorded three home runs across the two games.

GAME ONE- UIU-5, QU-9
The action began quickly in the first inning. Gunnar Wicklund started the scoring with a two-run homer to right center, bringing Jared Grams across the plate to give the Peacocks a 2-0 lead. However, Quincy responded immediately. A groundout to second base allowed a run to score, bringing around their first run, and later, a wild pitch allowed another runner to cross the plate, tying the game at 2-2.

Quincy continued their offensive push in the second inning. A sacrifice fly to right field allowed a runner to score and gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead. The Hawks kept the momentum rolling in the third when a solo homer to center field extended their lead to 4-2.

In the fourth inning, Wicklund launched his second home run of the game, a solo shot to right field, bringing the Peacocks back within one at 4-3.

Quincy was able to respond in the fifth. A two-run homer to right field, scoring one run, put the Hawks ahead 6-3. Upper Iowa fought back in the sixth inning with an RBI single to center field, scoring a runner. Then, a double to right center scored another, bringing Upper Iowa closer at 6-5.

However, it was Quincy's big sixth inning that sealed the win. A clutch two-run single to left field extended their lead to 8-5. The Hawks weren't finished, as they scored again on a wild pitch, making it a 9-5 ball game.

The Peacocks were unable to respond in the final frames, and Quincy secured the 9-5 victory.

Wicklund paced the team with three hits, followed by Grams with two.

Ethan Bombardier (0-1) took the loss on the mound after five innings of work. He allowed five hits and six runs (all earned), while striking out three.

GAME TWO- UIU-6, QU-5

The game began with Upper Iowa's offense coming alive in the first inning. Wicklund blasted a two-run homer to left field, bringing Ethan Sawyer across the plate to give the Peacocks an early 2-0 lead. Moments later, Brock Zimmer added another solo homer to left field, extending Upper Iowa's lead to 3-0.

Quincy responded in the second inning after launching a solo homer to right field to get the Hawks on the board, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Then, a two-run homer down the left-field line brought Quincy within one at 4-3.

Upper Iowa kept their foot on the gas in the third. Thane Meiners lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Bryce Hall home and pushing the lead to 5-3. The Peacocks added another run when Justin Baehler grounded out to shortstop, scoring Zimmer and extending the advantage to 6-3.

But Quincy didn't go down quietly. In the third, they singled to right field, driving in a run and bringing the score to 6-4. The Hawks continued to chip away in the sixth, as a ground out to third base drove in one more to make it a one-run game at 6-5.

Despite a strong late push, Quincy couldn't manage to bring the tying run across the plate, and Upper Iowa held on for the 6-5 win.

Isaiah Maes (2-2) grabbed the win on the bump, throwing for six innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs. He rang up six batters.

Zimmer and Wicklund led at the place with two hits apiece.
