Peacocks Head to Hawks’ Territory to Ignite Conference Action

THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK BASEBALL
Peacock baseball opens conference action this weekend against Quincy in a four-game series March 7-9. They will play one game Friday (2 p.m.), a doubleheader on Saturday (12 p.m. start), and a single game on Sunday (12 p.m.). UIU comes into the weekend with a 3-7 mark on the season, while the Hawks enter at 7-7.

GLVC PRESEASON POLL
Upper Iowa was voted 14th in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll after accumulating 37 votes. Indianapolis was voted in the preseason coaches' poll to win the 2025 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) baseball championship.
 
Trailing behind the Greyhounds to round out the top five were Maryville (174 votes), Quincy (164 votes), Drury (156) and Missouri-St. Louis (141).
 
Rounding out the poll through 15th are the University of Illinois Springfield (124), Lewis (123), Rockhurst (107), William Jewell (99), Missouri S&T (89), McKendree (67), Truman State (45), Southwest Baptist (41), Upper Iowa University (37), and Lincoln (14).
 
EARLY STANDOUTS AT THE PLATE
Ethan Sawyer has been a standout at the plate with a batting average of .410, driving in 9 RBIs and hitting 1 home run in 39 at-bats. Gabe Bombardier follows closely with a.351 average, notching 4 home runs and 12 RBIs in 37 at-bats. Bryce Hall has recorded a .333 average, adding 11 hits and 4 RBIs, along with a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen bases. Gunnar Wicklund has smacked 3 home runs, and tallied 9 RBIs. Jared Hoodjer has managed 2 home runs and drove in 6 RBIs in 27 at-bats.
 
ABOUT THE HAWKS (Courtesy of QU Communications)
Quincy was selected 3rd in the GLVC Preseason Poll. The Hawks return key arms in Kobe Essien and Tom Conzemius to the 2025 roster. Essien returns after 13 starts and four wins in his true senior campaign while Conzemius transitioned into a starting role, knocking out 47 batters in 53 innings. 
 
2024 GLVC Freshman of the Year David Broughton had the team's second highest batting average last campaign with a .367 and produced 90 total runs for Quincy and will be key to the Hawks offense in 2025. The Hawks will also turn to JD Ortiz, who's slugging percentage of .629 in 2024 leads the returning Hawks. 
 
Quincy is 7-7 on the season, and swept the four-game series against Colorado School of Mines in their last outing. 
 
ON DECK
Baseball hosts their first home series on March 14-16 against Truman State on Robertson Woods Field.
