The Southwest Baptist Bearcats defended their home field as they defeated Upper Iowa 5-1 in game one and 6-3 in game two.
Game One
Dorothy Ziebell scored Upper Iowa's lone run in game one as she hit her first homer of the season at the top of the fourth inning. Ziebell hit 2-3 in the match as she added a single to right field to lead off the second.
Serah Shafer posted a 3-4 stat line at the plate with three singles and
Kylie Doty recorded a single up the middle at the top of the sixth inning.
Sara Reid pitched the first five innings of the game, where she struck out four batters with three going down swinging.
The Bearcats scored the opening runs at the bottom of the third inning, where they hit an RBI triple out to left center, before following that up with an RBI single to center field. They scored their final three runners at the bottom of the sixth, securing the 5-1 win.
Game Two
Shafer continued to thrive in game two, as she opened the first inning with a single to center field. She quickly stole second base, and she would score the opening run on a sacrifice fly by
Tristin Doster.
Rae VanMilligan led off the second inning by hitting the first of four Upper Iowa doubles, which went out to left center field. She put the Peacocks ahead 2-0 as
Reagon Proud hit her first career triple to center field.
SBU battled back as they scored a run in the second, and three runs in the bottom of the third inning. They were able to extend the lead to 6-2 in the fourth with a two RBI double to right center field.
Doster recorded a double to lead off the seventh inning, and she scored UIU's third run on an
Addyson Alber single. The Bearcats were able to close out the game with three consecutive outs, to take game two by a score of 6-3.
Alber hit 3-4 in game two, which included a third inning double to left field. Shafer and Doster each added two hits of their own, with both players scoring one run. On the mound,
Delaney Vetter pitched the first three innings, where she struck out four batters.
The Peacocks will return to the Eischeid Softball Complex this weekend, where they have recorded a 4-2 mark on the year. UIU will face Lincoln on Saturday, Apr. 5 and Missouri S&T on Sunday, Apr. 6 with games starting at 12 and 2 p.m. on both days.
