Upper Iowa Snags Series Over Southwest Baptist

Upper Iowa baseball captured its third consecutive victory after defeating Southwest Baptist 8-6 on Sunday in game four, taking the series 3-1. Ethan Sawyer led the team at the plate with three hits, followed by Brock Zimmer with two.

Steve Marhefke earned his first win of the season on the mound after pitching 6.1 innings. He struck out five batters, allowing three hits and three runs, despite keeping a hitless record through the first six innings. Tyler Glowacki earned his second save on the bump after throwing two innings in relief.

Upper Iowa struck early in the first inning with back-to-back homers. Gunnar Wicklund launched a solo shot to right center, followed by Brock Zimmer's two-run homer to left center, putting the Peacocks up 3-0. The offense continued to deliver with a sacrifice fly from Jared Grams in the fifth, bringing in Dylan McVeigh to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Peacocks added to their advantage in the seventh as Grams once again came through with a sacrifice fly to right field, this time scoring Ero Wallin for a 5-0 lead.

Southwest Baptist fought back in the seventh, starting with a two-run homer to left field, cutting the lead to 5-2. They continued to rally with a single to center field that brought in another run, making it 5-3.

The Bearcats continued their momentum in the eighth inning, as they drew a walk with the bases loaded, narrowing the gap to 5-4.

UIU responded in the bottom of the ninth. Brock Zimmer singled to left and drove in three runs behind a fielding error to make it 7-4. Thane Meiners added an insurance run with a single to center, scoring Zimmer and pushing the lead to 8-4.

Southwest Baptist mounted one last rally in the top of the ninth. They recorded two hits and two runs in the final frame, trailing 8-6, but the Peacocks' defense held strong and sealed their seventh conference victory.

Baseball is back in action on Tuesday against UW Parkside in Fayette at Robertson Woods Field.
