Upper Iowa hosted Rockhurst, where the Peacocks took game one by a score of 5-3, but the Hawks responded with a 3-0 win in game two.
Game One
The Peacocks got off to a phenomenal start as they put together a four-run inning at the bottom of the first. Junior
Serah Shafer was walked to start the game, and senior
Tristin Doster was able to reach first base on an infield error. With one out, sophomore
Addyson Alber's keen eye led to her being walked which loaded the bases.
Freshman
Dorothy Ziebell hit an RBI grounder to second base, where Alber was tagged out while Shafer successfully made it home. Fifth year
Rae VanMilligan would then give Upper Iowa all the momentum as she smacked a three-run homer over the center field wall, putting the Peacocks ahead 4-0.
Upper Iowa held Rockhurst to five scoreless innings, where junior
Sara Reid struck out consecutive batters in both the top of the third and the fifth. Shafer added a terrific diving catch in center field during the first inning, which kept the Hawks off the board.
The Hawks led off the sixth with a double to left center field, and they would advance two runners into scoring position on a bunt single followed by a stolen base. They were able to cut into the lead with a two RBI double out to right center by Claire Tipton as Eva Fulk and Avery Huffman scored on the play. They followed that up with an RBI single to left, where Tipton's run would make it a 4-3 game.
With one out, Ziebell recorded another hit, as she doubled out to the center field wall. Sophomore
Elliott Pomeroy subbed in to pinch run, and she advanced to third on a single by VanMilligan. VanMilligan would proceed to steal second, and junior
Kylie Doty would be walked to load the bases. Senior
Reagan Church put the Peacocks ahead 5-3, as her RBI ground out brought Pomeroy home.
Reid opened the seventh inning by striking out her batter swinging, and she would record the final out of the game on another strikeout swinging. She struck out seven batters in the game, en route to improving to 5-0 in the GLVC.
Game Two
The Hawks got on the board at the bottom of the second inning, as they took advantage of a fielding error. They were able to score another run on a fielder's choice with runners at the corner, before taking a 3-0 lead with an RBI double to right center in the fifth.
The Peacocks recorded five hits in the second match with Shafer and Doty each posting two hits. With two outs and a runner on third, Rockhurst found themselves with an opportunity to extend their lead. They hit a single out to left field, which was fielded by Doty. She made a perfect throw to Doster at the plate, who tagged the sliding runner for out number three. The Hawks were able to close out the game on a fly out near the center field wall, to secure the 3-0 game which split the series.
The Peacocks will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 23 as they host the William Jewell Cardinals at 12 and 2 p.m.
