Upper Iowa improved to 7-5 in the GLVC as they took down the William Jewell Cardinals in back-to-back games. The Peacocks overcame a five-run deficit in game one, winning 14-12, and they scored four unanswered runs to take game two by a score of 7-5.
Game One
The Peacocks scored a season-high of 14 runs in game one, which came on 13 hits from nine different batters.
Senior
Tristin Doster put together the greatest game of her Peacock career as she hit 3-3 in the match, before being walked during her fourth at bat. She opened the game with a two-run homer in the first inning, out to right center field. With the Peacocks down 7-2 at the bottom of the third, Doster hit a two RBI single out to left field, which cut the lead to three. She followed that up by launching a grand slam over the right field wall at the bottom of the fourth which gave the Peacocks an 8-7 lead. Doster finished the game with two runs and two home runs, while hitting a career-high eight RBIs.
Junior
Taylor Sedam hit 1-2, where she was walked twice and reached first on a fielder's choice. In four plate appearances, Sedam was able to score a career-high four runs as she made it home in the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings.
Fifth year
Rae VanMilligan and juniors
Kylie Doty and
Taylor Hamaker each added one run in the match. Doty hit 2-4, VanMilligan went 1-3 with one walk and Hamaker hit 1-2 after coming on as a substitution.
Sophomore
Kaitlin Foral was also able to make an impact off the bench, as she subbed in as a pinch hitter in the fifth inning. In her lone at bat, Foral smacked a three RBI homer over the left center field wall, which extended the Peacocks lead to 11-7.
On the mound, junior
Sara Reid recorded eight strikeouts across six innings. She pitched 97 strikes on the day, highlighted by a first inning where she struck out three batters who went down swinging. Freshman
Dorothy Ziebell came on to pitch at the top of the seventh, and she threw a strikeout for out number three, leaving the go-ahead run stranded on second base.
Junior
Serah Shafer recorded a 2-4 statline at the plate, while also being walked one time. She matched her career-high of three runs, which is a feat she achieved earlier this season against Missouri Southern. With the game tied at 12 apiece at the bottom of the seventh, Shafer found herself at the plate with one out. She came through in the clutch as she hit a two RBI walk off home run out to left field on the very first pitch, giving Upper Iowa the 14-12 victory.
Game Two
Upper Iowa followed up their thrilling victory by scoring seven runs on 12 hits in game two.
Freshman
Faith Lemonds and fifth year
Delaney Vetter each split reps on the mound as Lemonds pitched the first three innings while Vetter appeared in the final four. Lemonds recorded two strikeouts on the day, while Vetter struck out four batters en route to her picking up the win.
Doster and sophomore
Addyson Alber each scored two runs with Doster hitting 2-2 with two walks while Alber went 2-4. Doster finished the day going a perfect 5-5 at the plate, scoring four runs on the day.
Ziebell recorded a game-high three RBIs, where she hit 1-4 in her DH role. She opened the game with a two RBI double out to left field, where Alber and Doster each scored the opening runs. She added an RBI on a fielder's choice to second with the bases loaded in the third inning, which extended the Peacock lead to 3-0. Following a five run fourth inning by William Jewell, Ziebell scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice by Foral, which put Upper Iowa ahead 6-5.
VanMilligan hit 2-4 with one RBI and Doty posted a 1-4 statline at the plate, where she added an RBI as well. Shafer recorded a 1-4 performance in the game, while Sedam hit 2-4. Both players scored one run, with Sedam crossing the plate for the final run of the game to secure the 7-5 victory.
The Peacocks will voyage to Missouri for a pair of double headers this upcoming weekend. Upper Iowa will take on Drury, Saturday, Mar. 29 and Southwest Baptist on Sunday, Mar. 30 with games starting at 12 and 2 p.m. on both days.
