Upper Iowa baseball faced Lewis in doubleheader action on Sunday to wrap up their series. The Peacocks fell in both games by a score of 3-2 and 7-3, shifting to 3-7 on the season. They are back in action next weekend in Quincy, Ill., against the Hawks on Mar. 7-9.
GAME ONE: UIU-2, LU-3
The Peacocks took an early lead in the second inning of game one.
Ethan Sawyer flied out to right field, driving in
Jared Grams to put Upper Iowa up 1-0. However, Lewis responded in the top of the third with a two-run rally. They singled and advanced to third on an error, scoring two runs and putting them ahead 2-1.
In the fourth inning, Lewis tacked on another run to their lead after a triple to right-center drove in another run to make it 3-1.
Upper Iowa fought back in the fifth inning, with
Brock Zimmer singling to right field to drive in Sawyer, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Gunnar Wicklund also advanced to third on the play, but the Peacocks could not bring him home, and their efforts to tie the game fell short.
Upper Iowa mustered three five while Lewis notched four.
Isaiah Maes (1-2) picked up the loss on the mound after five innings of work, allowing four hits and three runs while registering five strikeouts.
Thane Meiners threw one inning of relief, allowing zero runs and striking out two.
GAME TWO: UIU-3, LU-7
Game two remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Lewis took an early lead. A wild pitch allowed them to bring in their first run, and a sacrifice fly brought in their second to put them up 2-0. The Flyers extended their lead in the sixth inning. A triple to right field brought in another run, and they later scored on a passed ball, making it 4-0.
Upper Iowa mounted a response in the bottom of the seventh.
Ethan Sawyer singled to right field, driving in
Sage Stellmacher, and advancing
Paul Safranski to third.
Gunnar Wicklund then singled to center to bring in Safranski, cutting the lead to 4-2. The Peacocks continued their rally when
Gabe Bombardier singled to left field, scoring Sawyer to pull within one, 4-3.
However, the Flyers responded with three runs in the top of the eighth. A fielder's choice sacrifice bunt brought in a run, and a single by another player, followed by a hit from another, pushed their lead to 7-3.
Despite their best efforts, Upper Iowa couldn't string together enough offense to come back, and Lewis clinched the victory with a 7-3 final score.
The Peacocks recorded nine hits, while the Flyers managed seven. Ethann Sawyer led the team at the plate with two hits.
Upper Iowa's pitching staff was led by
Marcus Champagne (0-2), who started the game and worked 3.1 innings. He allowed just one hit and walked seven batters, giving up two earned runs.
Tyler Glowacki relieved Champagne and threw 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three and walking three.
