Peacocks Split Series in Bentonville

The Peacocks split the series on the opening day of the Alvy Early Memorial Classic. The Peacocks recorded a 6-4 victory over Washburn before Missouri Southern pulled out a 9-4 win in game two.

Game One vs. Washburn Ichabods
Junior Sara Reid opened the game by recording two strikeouts in a row before adding an easy ground out to cap off the first. Sophomore Addyson Alber advanced to first on an error, before fifth year Rae VanMilligan recorded a two RBI double out to left field. With two outs, freshman Dorothy Ziebell gave the Peacocks a 1-0 lead, on a single to right field that brought Alber home. Junior Taylor Sedam singled to center atop the third, and senior Triston Doster followed that up with a 2-RBI home run over the left field wall.

The Ichabods added a single to start the bottom of the third, before taking advantage of a pair of errors to make it a 3-1 game. They had a great opportunity to potentially tie the game or take the lead in the fourth inning, as they loaded the bases with three consecutive singles. However, with two outs, Reid forced a ground out to third, keeping UIU ahead in the game. Washburn would hit consecutive singles in the fifth as well, including an RBI to left which cut the lead to one.

Ziebell and sophomore Elliott Pomeroy each got on base as they were walked atop the sixth. With two outs, Sedam launched Upper Iowa's second home run of the day beyond the left field wall, recording three RBIs to put the Peacocks up 6-2.

Washburn put two runners on due to a pair of errors in the sixth, and added a single to right which loaded the bases. They scored their third run of the game on an error in the outfield, and added another on a fielder's choice to close out the inning down by two runs. Following an Ichabod single in the bottom of the seventh, Reid struck out her third batter of the game and then picked up out number three on a pop fly to left to secure the 6-4 victory.

Game Two vs. Missouri Southern Lions
Shafer was walked to start game two, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Doster continued to thrive as she hit an RBI single to center field, bringing Shafer home to put the Peacocks up 1-0 early in the match.

The Lions posted consecutive singles following a UIU error, and an RBI ground out would put them in the lead. With runners on first and second, Emily Perry hit a two RBI single to third base, concluding a third inning where Missouri Southern scored four runs.

Pomeroy reached first on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third, and Shafer advanced her to second on a single with a bunt. Sedam's sacrifice bunt would advance both runners into scoring position which led to Pomeroy scoring on an error in the infield. Shafer scored the Peacocks third run of the game on a dropped third strike, which would cut the lead to one.

Missouri Southern was able to respond with by scoring two runs in the fourth, and they scored three more runs in a fifth inning where they recorded four singles. With the Peacocks down 9-3, Shafer added another single out to left in the fifth, and she proceeded to advance to second before stealing third base. With runners on first and second, VanMilligan and junior Shannon Nelson were each walked, which led to Shafer scoring her second run of the game. Doster was able to add a double out to center field in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lions were able to close out the inning on a ground out to conclude the 9-4 game.

The Peacocks will continue the tournament tomorrow, Feb. 8 as they face Northwest Missouri State at 11 a.m. and Newman at 1:30 p.m.
