Upper Iowa faced Lewis in a doubleheader Friday afternoon and fell in both games. They dropped game one by a score of 10-8 and game two in a 14-3 decision. The Peacocks shifted to 3-5 on the season, while the Flyers improved to 4-3.
The two teams will battle again on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
GAME ONE: UIU-8, LU-10
Lewis came from behind by seven runs to defeat Upper Iowa, 10-8.
Gabe Bombardier paced the Peacock offense with a three-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the fifth.
The contest started with Upper Iowa taking control early. In the first inning, Bombardier hit a three-run homer to center field, bringing in
Gunnar Wicklund and
Ethan Sawyer to give UIU a 3-0 lead. The offense continued to roll in the fourth inning when
Chase Chappel singled to right field, driving in
Jared Grams for a 4-0 advantage.
Lewis responded in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that allowed one run to score, cutting the deficit to 4-1. However, Upper Iowa struck again in the fifth, as Bombardier launched his second home run of the game, a grand slam to right field, extending UIU's lead to 8-1.
The Flyers' bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth. They started off the scoring with a double that brought in a run to make it 8-2. A few moments later, a single to right field drove in two more runs, narrowing the margin to 8-4. Lewis continued their surge with a single, driving in two runs and bringing in two more to make it 8-6.
They tripled to right field, scoring two to tie the game at 8-8. The Flyers capped off their comeback with a two-run homer, giving Lewis their first lead of the game, 10-8.
Upper Iowa was unable to bring in any runs in the sixth or seventh inning. Lewis secured the 10-8 victory and scored nine of their ten runs in the fifth inning. The Flyers came back from a seven-run deficit to claim the win.
Bombardier went 3-4 at the plate and notched 7 RBIs.
Ethan Sawyer and
Gunnar Wicklund each managed two hits.
Brady Stevens threw 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and eight earned runs while registering six strikeouts.
Dylan Hesch took the loss on the mound. He pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two earned runs and three hits.
GAME TWO: UIU-3, LU-14
In a high-scoring contest in game two, the Flyers exploded for 14 runs, cruising to a 14-3 victory over the Peacocks. The game was marked by a late offensive surge, with Lewis scoring in six of the final seven innings to seal the win.
Upper Iowa jumped out to an early lead in the first inning.
Bryce Hall started with a double to center field, bringing
Ethan Sawyer home for a 1-0 lead. Moments later,
Brock Zimmer's single to left field scored Hall, extending the lead to 2-0.
However, Lewis responded in the top of the second. A ground out to shortstop brought in the runner from third to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Flyers then tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth when a double to center scored one more. They later brought one in on a wild pitch, giving Lewis a 3-2 lead. The Flyers weren't done yet in the fifth, as a double to left drove in two more runs, including an unearned run, to make it 5-2.
Upper Iowa fought back in the sixth inning, scoring once more.
Jared Grams grounded out to first base, allowing
Gabe Bombardier to score and cutting the lead to 5-3. But that was the last time the Peacocks would score, as the Flyers took control in the bottom half of the inning.
Lewis delivered a knockout punch in the sixth with a three-run triple to left, bringing home three to give the Flyers an 8-3 advantage. The scoring continued in the seventh as the Flyers tacked on four more runs to push the score to 12-3.
The Flyers capped off their dominant performance in the eighth on a home run to right field, scoring two more for the 14-3 lead. That would be the final score, as Lewis finished with 14 runs on 15 hits.
Upper Iowa managed three runs on six hits, with no player recording more than one RBI. Despite the early lead, the Peacocks struggled to keep up with the offensive output from the Flyers.
Bryce Hall and
Brock Zimmer led the team with two hits apiece.
Steve Marhefke started the game strong on the mound, throwing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Gabe Olson (L, 0-1) pitched four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out three and walking two.
Mason Adkins followed with one inning of work, giving up three runs (all earned) on three hits, and
Cameron Powell finished with one inning, allowing six runs (all earned) on five hits. The pitching staff gave up 12 earned runs and five walks while recording 2 strikeouts.
