Peacocks Split Series at the Lewis Flyer Dome Invite

The Peacocks concluded day two of the Lewis Flyer Dome Invite with 4-3 defeat to Roosevelt before taking down the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons by a score of 5-4.

Game One vs. Roosevelt Lakers
The Lakers opened the game by singling on a bunt, and they would quickly take a 1-0 lead on a double out to right field. Juniors Serah Shafer and Kylie Doty each recorded singles on their first appearance at the plate while Shafer would steal second. Roosevelt hit a single atop the third inning and freshman Dorothy Ziebell responded by striking out the next batter. The Lakers were able to record three hits in a row, highlighted by a two RBI double to right center field before a single up the middle would put them ahead 4-0.

Shafer added her second hit on a line drive up the middle and she stole second once again to reach eight stolen bases on the year. Junior Shannon Nelson hit a single down the left side to advance Shafer to third, before a sacrifice pop fly by senior Tristin Doster would bring Shafer home. Nelson was able to cut the lead to 4-2 as she scored on an RBI single down the middle by junior Taylor Sedam.

Freshman Faith Lemonds recorded two strikeouts at the top of the fourth, to conclude a three-up, three-down inning. Fifth year Rae VanMilligan's keen eye led to her being walked in the bottom of the fourth, and she was able to advance into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Doty. With two outs, freshman Gezzelle Guardado hit an RBI single to second as VanMilligan's run would make it a 4-3 game. Lemonds continued to thrive on the mound as she struck out two more batters in the seventh, finishing with five strikeouts in four innings pitched. The Peacocks were able to put a runner on base at the bottom of the seventh, but the Lakers would force a ground out to end the UIU comeback effort by a score of 4-3.

Game Two vs. Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons
Ziebell recorded the Peacocks first hit of game two with a double to center field and Lemonds would add a single to third at the top of the second inning. Junior Sara Reid would pitch four scoreless innings to start the game, while striking out four batters.

The Peacocks led off the fifth by reaching on an error, before Shafer got on base with a single to left field. With one out, Sedam hit a double to left field which brought sophomore Elliott Pomeroy home to give UIU the lead, while advancing Shafer to third. Doster then put the Peacocks up 2-0, by hitting a single to the same spot as Sedam, with Shafer scoring on the play. Both Sedam and Doster would each score on an infield error with two outs, extending the Peacocks lead to 4-0.

Reid struck out her fifth batter of the day in the sixth, but the Dragons were able to cut the lead to 4-2 as they recorded a triple and three singles in a row. Senior Reagan Church quickly put an end to any momentum MSU-Moorhead gained, as she launched her second home run of the season over the left field wall to put Upper Iowa ahead 5-2.

The Dragons added a homer of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 5-3 game. With momentum back on MSU-Moorhead's side, fifth year Delaney Vetter retired the side by striking out three batters in a row who all went down swinging. She struck out another batter early into the seventh inning, before the Dragons hit a single to center field with two outs. They put runners on first and second with a walk, before an RBI single to left would cut the lead to one. With the game on the line, the Peacocks forced out number three on a grounder, completing the 5-4 victory.

The Peacocks will close out the tournament against Bemidji State on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 9 a.m.
