FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock women's wrestling heads to Quincy, Illinois, on Sunday to compete in its first GLVC dual of the season. UIU wrestles against No. 3 Grand Valley State (Mich.) at 9 a.m., No. 12 Northern Michigan at 11 a.m. and No. 2 McKendree (Ill.) at noon.
LAST TIME OUT
The last meet Upper Iowa wrestled in was the Luther Open back on Nov. 14. Kylee Shoop starred in the invite for UIU, finishing second and recording 22 points in the women's 103. She won the quarterfinals with a fall at 0:38 and the semifinal with a fall at 1:49, before losing in the first-place match to Moni Griffin (Augustana (Ill.)) by a fall at 0:36.
Mya Mendoza took home fifth place along with 14.5 points in the women's 180, after beating Sidney Zimmerman (Cornell College) by a fall time of 1:33. Eliana Callies was the only other
Peacock to earn points with 6.5, picking up three wins on the day.
THE LAKERS - 9 a.m.
No. 3 Grand Valley State's strongest performance this season came at the Pointer Open, where the Lakers totaled four champions across the 103 (Libby Roberts), 117 (Hannah Palise), 131 (Elleni Johnson) and 160-pound (Rayana Sahagun) divisions. Roberts has been their top performer at 103 pounds. She won titles at both the Pointer Open and the Adrian Open, posting a 4-0 record at each meet.
According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, Grand Valley State has 10 wrestlers ranked nationally. Sahagun (103) and Katherina Lange (138) lead the way with No. 1 rankings, while Sage Mortimer sits at No. 2 at 117. Aspen Blasko (124) and Johnson (160) hold No. 3 spots, followed by Sabrina Nauss at No. 4 at 180. Ana Malovich (110) and Hannah Palise (131) are both ranked sixth, Aaliyah Grandberry is seventh at 207 and Maggie Buurma rounds out the group with a No. 10 ranking at 145.
THE WILDCATS - 11 a.m.
No. 12 Northern Michigan has competed in three events, with its strongest showing coming at the 8 Women Battle. Abbie Miles (180), Alissa Caltagirone (145), Jamie Cook (124), Keaton Hood (138) and Mickaela Keanne (207) all claimed titles. Miles has quickly made her presence felt by winning both the Pointer Open and the 8 Women Battle.
The Wildcats also feature four nationally ranked wrestlers. No. 6 Emma Heslin (103), No. 6 Abbie Miles (180), No. 7 Caltagirone (145) and No. 10 Sophia Bassino (160).
THE BEARCATS - 12 p.m.
No. 2 McKendree has an undefeated 8-0 record in its matches and duals, highlighted by ranked wins over No. 3 North Central (Ill.), No. 21 Gannon (Fla.) and No. 25 Lindenwood (Mo.). The best open for the Bearcats so far has been the Adrian Open, where Heather Crull (103), Katey Valdez (103) and Norah Swaim (117) each claimed first place.
McKendree has eight nationally ranked wrestlers this season. Gabrielle Tedesco (110), Yu Sakamoto (117) and Shelby Moore (124) are ranked No.1. Krull (103) and Alex Szkotniki (131) hold it down at No. 3. Haylie Jaffe (138) and Destiney Rodriguez (180) rank second in the nation in their weight class, Savannah Gomez (180) ranks fifth nationally in her weight class.
