Women’s soccer tallies season-high shot total, but comes up just short against Cardinals

Peacocks shoot 15 times in 2-1 loss to William Jewell

FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa women's soccer (2-5-2, 0-4-1 GLVC) came up short against William Jewell (Mo.) (1-5-3, 1-3-2 GLVC) on Friday night in a 2-1 loss. The Peacocks outshot the Cardinals 15-6, but could not capitalize on the opportunities to give William Jewell its first win.

The first goal of the game came three seconds into the 39th minute. William Jewell's Lux Sands knocked in a header off a crosser from Jules Bise. That gave the Cardinals a 1-0 halftime advantage despite being outshot, 9-2, by the Peacocks.

Giovanna Alexa Garcia found the net early in the second half. Melanie Mejia passed the ball from midfield to Alexa Garcia behind the Cardinal defense at the 20-yard line with just the goalie to beat. Alexa Garcia knocked the ball past the keeper in the middle of the net for the score.

16 minutes later, a Peacock penalty in the box gave William Jewell a golden opportunity. Sands knocked it in on the bottom right side past Sienna Johnson for the go-ahead goal. Upper Iowa had one more opportunity with a shot by Alyssa Torres in the 76th minute, but William Jewell goalkeeper Hailey Davin saved it.

Haylie Hutchinson led the Peacocks with four shots on goal, all of which came between the 19th minute and the 32nd minute. Haylee Allen had four shots with two on goal, three of which came in the first 15 minutes of the game.

Torres had three shots on goal, all in the second half. Mejia tallied two shots on goal with the assist. Alexa Garcia scored on her only shot of the game. Johnson had one save in the net.

The 15 shots marked a season-high for the Peacocks. This is the first time Upper Iowa has outshot an opponent since the season opener vs. Minnesota Crookston on Sept. 4.

Sands led William Jewell with five shots, three on goal. She was the only Cardinal with a shot on goal. Davin totaled 11 saves at goalkeeper for the Cardinals.

The Peacocks held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. William Jewell had 13 fouls while Upper Iowa had 10.

UIU is back in Harms-Eischeid Stadium on Sunday at noon against Rockhurst (Mo.) (3-3-3, 2-2-2 GLVC). The Hawks tied with Lewis (Ill.) (3-1-4, 2-1-2 GLVC) by a score of 1-1 on Friday evening.
