UIU men’s soccer’s late comeback not enough in 3-2 loss vs. UMSL

Nagy netted a goal during the 26th minute and Deick netted a goal in the 86th minute

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Upper Iowa men's soccer team (3-9-2, 2-7-2 GLVC) was unable to mount a comeback against Missouri–St. Louis (5-4-5, 4-3-4 GLVC). Timur Nagy scored in the first half, and Florian Deick added a goal in the second, but UIU ultimately fell short, 3-2.

The Peacocks were the first to get on the board in the 26th minute. Alejandro Sanchez sent a pass toward Nagy, who was positioned in the center of the pitch just a few yards out to knock it into the net.

UMSL responded in the 40th minute to tie the game at 1-1 with a goal from Benjamin Ocampo. Melo Mensah and Gibson Hunt were both credited with assists.

In the second half, the Tritons extended their lead to 3-1 with goals in the 47th and 64th minutes. Ocampo found the back of the net again, assisted by Hunt and Mensah, while Isaac Valverde added the third goal with another assist from Mensah.

Upper Iowa attempted a late comeback after Deick scored in the 86th minute. Sanchez delivered a corner kick, and Deick headed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net past the goalkeeper to make it 3-2.

Nagy recorded his fourth goal of the season, while Deick recorded his second of the season. Sanchez had two assists and Navarro had one.

Dexter Garrett, Deick, Tura Dalu, Arnas Kurakinas and Noah Nymark-Pedersen all played 90 minutes. Nymark-Pedersen had three saves on the afternoon.

UIU was outshot 16-10 and had more fouls, 25-19. However, the team took more corners, 7-5.

The Peacocks will stay in St. Louis for the weekend and will play Maryville (7-5-2, 6-4-1 GLVC) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
