Upper Iowa gears up for gridiron test against William Jewell

Peacocks face Cardinals in rematch of last season's overtime thriller

FAYETTE, Iowa - The Peacock football team (5-2, 3-1 GLVC) gets on the bus to head to Liberty, Missouri, against William Jewell (2-5, 0-4 GLVC). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Green Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 25.

LAST TIME OUT
The Upper Iowa defense didn't allow any points in a 39-2 victory over Southwest Baptist at Harms-Eischeid Stadium this past Saturday. SBU entered the game with the second-best scoring and rushing offense in the GLVC, but was held to 36 rushing yards. 

Redshirt freshman running back Jayden Gordon led the Peacock offense with a career-high 99 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Overstreet Jr. finished 19-of-26 (73.1%) with 170 yards and a jump pass touchdown to Eddie Burgess. The senior quarterback also had a one-yard rushing touchdown. 

The Peacocks set the tone early in the game, outscoring the Bearcats 17-0 in the opening quarter. Gordon had 80 yards on the ground in the opening quarter. Linebacker Trevor Thompson had his first interception of the season on the second drive, setting up a 49-yard field goal by Nathan Behne.

That field goal marked a career-long for Behne until later in the half. He lined up for a 51-yarder and drilled it, giving UIU a 26-2 lead at halftime. Clark Coleman scored the final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard scamper. 

The Peacocks outrushed the Bearcats, 272-36, but Southwest Baptist had the advantage in passing, 210-170. Upper Iowa held Southwest Baptist to 2-of-15 on third downs, while the Peacocks were 7-of-15 on third downs. 

This was the lowest amount of points scored against Upper Iowa since 2013 when the team shut out Minnesota Crookston in the season opener. The Peacock defense totaled a season-high 11 tackles-for-loss.

GLVC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Behne and Thompson were awarded GLVC Players of the Week accolades on Monday. This marked the second time that Behne has earned GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week, and it was the first GLVC Defensive Player of the Week for Thompson. Upper Iowa has had three players win GLVC weekly honors this season. 

STATISTICS SUMMARY
Overstreet Jr. leads the nation in completion percentage at 73.7%, tied for first with Preston Brown of Catawba (N.C.). He ranks 20th nationally in completions per game (20) and 23rd in passing efficiency (159.2). 

He's thrown for 1,581 yards and 12 touchdowns, both ranking sixth in the GLVC. Overstreet Jr. is responsible for 92 points this season, also ranking sixth in the conference. 

Damon Head Jr. leads the team in rushing with 415 yards (4.7 per carry) and six touchdowns. He ranks eighth in yards and is tied for second in touchdowns in the GLVC. Gordon is up to 262 yards (6.2 per carry) and three touchdowns. 

Senior receiver Mante Morrow is second in the GLVC in receiving yards (587) and in receiving touchdowns (eight). He has the highest receiving average in the GLVC at 97.8 yards per game. Nationally, he's seventh in receiving yards and ninth in receiving touchdowns.

On defense, Thompson leads the team in tackles with 50 (26 solo). Tade Parsons has 49 tackles with a team-high 31 solo tackles. Evan Dorn has 42 tackles (20 solo) and Darrell Matchem has 34 tackles (22 solo). 

Demontay Mack has five sacks, ranking fifth in the conference. He also leads the team in tackles-for-loss with 8.5, which is tied for fifth in the GLVC. Shaquille Roman has added five tackles for loss. Parsons leads the team in interceptions with two and Matchem is the leader in pass breakups with six. 

Behne leads the conference in punting average at 44.6 yards per punt. He's had seven punts inside the 20. His 51-yard field goal on Saturday was the second-longest by a GLVC kicker this season. 

The Peacocks are scoring 304. Points per game and giving up 22.1 points per game. That ranks fourth offensively and second defensively in the GLVC. The Peacocks rank third in both total offense (389.3 yards per game) and total defense (346.9 yards per game) in the conference.

AROUND THE GLVC
UIndy (7-1, 5-0 GLVC) continues to roll as it defeated Lincoln (Mo.) (2-5, 0-4 GLVC) this past weekend, 62-7. The Greyhounds moved up two spots in the AFCA poll this week to No. 13. Quarterback Gavin Sukup leads the GLVC with 2,152 passing yards and 23 touchdowns. 

Truman State (Mo.) (4-3, 3-1 GLVC) defeated Quincy (Ill.) (4-3, 2-2 GLVC) 44-21 this past weekend. The Bulldogs remain tied in second place with the Peacocks. McKendree (Ill.) (3-4, 3-2 GLVC) is in fourth place. 

UIndy leads the conference in both scoring offense (46.4 ppg) and scoring defense (20.1 ppg). The Greyhounds rank second in the nation in scoring offense. 

ABOUT THE CARDINALS
William Jewell enters this week's contest on a five-game losing streak after winning its first two games of the season. The Cardinals' closest loss was on Oct. 11 to Quincy in overtime, 34-33. 

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyler Kubat is 97-of-160 (60.63%) with 1,296 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's also thrown seven interceptions this season. Running back MicahJo Barnett is the top rusher for the Cardinals with 366 yards (5.2 per carry) and four touchdowns. 

Nate Barnett is the top receiver for the Cardinals with 20 catches for 393 yards and five touchdowns. He ranks eighth in the GLVC in receiving yards and fifth in receiving touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore Yasir Winston has 247 yards and two touchdowns receiving, while senior AJ Austene has 243 yards and three touchdowns. 

Linebacker Jonny Williams leads the team in tackles with 42 (25 solo). He's made plays all over the field with four tackles-for-loss, three breakups, two forced fumbles, one interception and one sack. Redshirt freshman linebacker Kyler Craigg has 41 tackles (24 solo). 

Defensive lineman Derrick Von Hubbard leads William Jewell in sacks with 5.5 and tackles-for-loss with 8.5. He's tied for third in the GLVC in sacks. Junior Parker Cummins has totaled four sacks this season, tying for seventh in the conference.

Head coach Jason Ambroson is in his second season with William Jewell. Before William Jewell, he coached nine seasons at Smithville High School (Mo.). He has a 7-11 record entering this weekend with the Cardinals.

LAST SEASON'S MATCHUP WITH THE CARDINALS
Upper Iowa defeated William Jewell 38-31 in overtime last October for Homecoming in Harms-Eischeid Stadium. The Peacocks were up 24-6 at halftime, but the Cardinals rallied back to take a seven-point lead late.

The Cardinals took the lead on a 47-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 left in the game. The Peacocks drove down the field, and Overstreet Jr. found Morrow for a 16-yard touchdown to tie the game with 30 seconds left. 

Overstreet Jr. ran the ball in from two yards out on the opening drive of overtime. Baxter Bohr sacked quarterback Tucker Griffin on the final play of overtime to seal the victory. 

Overstreet Jr. was 24-of-30 (80%) with 199 yards and two touchdowns. Jayden Mitchell added 68 yards rushing, 51 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Morrow had six catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. 

Nate Barnett led the receiving efforts for the Cardinals with 10 catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Griffin was 26-of-40 with 269 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Thompson was the one who picked him off for the Peacocks.
