Box Score The William Jewell Cardinals got the best of the Peacocks, as they recorded an 86-76 win to conclude UIU's homestand.
Helen Staley tipped off the Peacocks scoring effort by recording an and one layup, before
Mia Huberty knocked down a three. With the Peacocks down by two,
Ava Privet got on the board with a jump shot in the paint to tie the game, but the Cardinals followed that up with a 9-0 run. A Staley bucket cut into the lead with a minute left in the quarter, which concluded with WJC up 23-14.
William Jewell pushed the lead to double figures on a three pointer two minutes into the second, and Huberty responded with a pair of two-point baskets. Both teams would continue to trade baskets, and Huberty continued to thrive as she scored on another three pointer. She was able to get to the line on consecutive possessions, and she closed out the quarter shooting a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line. Huberty added another three pointer off a fastbreak assist from Staley, capping off a 16-point performance in the second.
With the Cardinals up 45-37 at halftime, Huberty opened the third by scoring on a layup. She added another two free throws, scored on a pull up jumper the following possession, and cut the lead to one-point with another swish at the charity stripe. Staley forced a steal, and
Kayla Bohr's layup gave UIU a 46-45 lead.
Lindsey Davis added a two-point jumper of her own, and William Jewell was able to tie the game with a three. Both teams would trade three pointers, as
Amelia Valentino swished her first shot of the day from beyond the arc, before the Cardinals converted two three-pointers in a row.
Sydnee Nelson then scored a three from the elbow, and the Peacocks closed out the quarter with a pair of
Anna Soler free throws, to cut into the 59-56 lead.
Huberty scored on a midrange bucket atop the fourth, and Bohr recorded her second three pointer of the game. With the Peacocks down by six and the shot clock running out, Nelson was forced to attempt a heavily contested three pointer from way beyond the arc, which she swished through the net to make it a 67-64 game. The Cardinals were able to extend the lead by converting an and one layup, and they followed that up with three consecutive jumpers. They closed out the second half shooting 5-7 from three, and that carried over to the charity stripe. With the Peacocks being forced to foul, WJC shot a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line to ice the game. Valentino swished a contested three pointer at the buzzer, but it was not enough as the game ended with a final score of 86-78.
Mia Huberty put together her second-highest scoring game of the season, with 33 points on 10-18 shooting. She shot 4-7 from beyond the arc, converted 9-10 of her free throws, and added three boards, two assists and one steal.
Helen Staley recorded seven points on 2-6 shooting, and she hauled in a career high 14 rebounds. Staley added three assists, two steals and blocked one shot.
Amelia Valentino scored nine points on a perfect 3-3 shooting from three-point range.
Anna Soler dropped eight points on 3-6 shooting, grabbed five rebounds and recorded a team-high four assists.
The Peacocks will venture to Missouri as they face Drury on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 5:45 p.m. and Southwest Baptist, Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
