Peacocks Tie with Warriors behind Second Half Surge

The Peacocks began the season with a 2-2 tie against the Winona State Warriors at Harms-Eischeid Stadium.

The Warriors opened the game with an aggressive attack, as they recorded the first shot on goal which was saved by junior Isabelle Wagner. She followed this up with a jumping one-handed deflection in the 21st minute, and concluded the half with three saves. Winona State was awarded a corner kick at the 25-minute mark, which they lobbed toward the goal and fielded by Jacey Sturek. Sturek's pass was deflected off the Peacock defense, before being kicked in by Madelynn Drasher to give Winona State a 1-0 lead.

The Peacocks offense was awarded two corner kicks early into the second half, and found themselves with a great opportunity to tie the game at the 60-minute mark. Sophomore Maile Kehano made a pass to freshman Jordan Goldstein, who sent the ball upfield for freshman Mikalyn Hidde. Hidde took a shot from the right side of the box, and her shot sailed past the outstretched arms of Winona State's goalie, into the top left corner of the goal, tying the game at one apiece.

Hidde added another shot on goal just two minutes later, which was saved by Alyson Jumper. Winona State was able to jump back into the lead on a goal by Abigail Williams in the 80th minute, that was assisted by Adriana Bixby and Jacey Sturek. With the game on the line, Kehano completed a long pass downfield to sophomore Haylie Hutchinson, deep in Winona State territory. Hutchinson dribbled past her defender inside the box, and dumped off a pass to Goldstein, which she kicked into the back of the net, tying the game in the 87th minute.

The Warriors had one last shot to take the lead in the 89th minute, but their final shot of the game sailed over the goal, concluding the game at 2-2. Maile Kehano assisted on both goals, and Jordan Goldstein and Mikalyn Hidde each scored a goal in their collegiate debut, while Goldstein added an assist as well.

The Peacocks will return home for their final non-conference game of the season, next weekend against Bemidji State. The match will begin on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m.
