The Peacocks traveled to Indianapolis, Ind. for game one against Butler last weekend. The Bulldogs prevailed in a 40-7 decision while compiling 27 points across the second and third quarters.
Â
The returning duo of quarterback
Darryl Overstreet Jr. and tight end
Eddie Burgess scored UIU's only touchdown after connecting on a toss of 16 yards into the end zone, followed by
Henry Vakerics who converted the extra point.
Upper Iowa rushed for 195 yards on 44 attempts, compared to Butler's 146 yards on 27 attempts.
Jayden Mitchell compiled a total 85 rushing yards on the day, while
RJ Wells tallied 83 with his longest run of 28 yards.
Â
Butler threw for 242 yards, while Upper Iowa totaled 121.
Mante Morrow led the team in receiving yards with 46.
Â
Trevor Thompson led the Peacock defense in tackles with six, while
Avery Dixon added four.
Zacarius Murray and
Tyler Owen each nabbed an interception, and the team tallied two pass breakups.
Â
AROUND THE GLVC
Three other league members were set to compete in opening week. Quincy had planned to verse Drake University, but the game concluded as a "no result" due to weather conditions, leaving only two other teams with scores from last week. Missouri S&T traveled northwest to battle Wayne State (Neb), and fell by a score of 49-17, while William Jewell was successful in their mission against Fort Lewis College as they defeated them 35-20. All GLVC schools are set to compete this week, and the schedule is listed here in the Peacock football game notes.Â
Â
THE SERIES
The first meeting between the Peacocks and the Golden Bears dates back to October 2007, when CSP came out on top in a 20-17 final. UIU was winless in the series until 2012 when they garnered their first victory by a four-point margin with a final score of 28-24. They had a three-game win streak against Concordia from 2015-2018, including their largest margin of victory 52-20. Upper Iowa has dropped the last four contests (2018-2021, 2023) and is searching to snap the streak in Saturday's matchup.Â
Â
GLVC PRESEASON POLL
Upper Iowa football landed seventh in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll after accumulating 25 votes. They edged out William Jewell, who was voted eighth with 14 votes, and GLVC newcomer Lincoln, who rounded out the poll in ninth with 13. The Peacocks trailed close behind Quincy in sixth (29 votes) and Southwest Baptist in fifth (33 votes).Â
Â
"We're excited about our second year in the GLVC," said Head Coach
Jason Hoskins. "We know the landscape a little bit better and are preparing to compete in the league."
Â
The University of Indianapolis was voted the unanimous choice to win the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) football title in the coaches' preseason poll. The preseason poll is selected by the league's nine head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their team, per GLVC Bylaws.
