Upper Iowa dropped to the Quincy Hawks in a hard fought 2-1 game to close out their homestand.
Junior keeper
Diogo Cardoso made an immediate impact for the Peacocks to start the game as he saved a shot that was fired from point blank range two minutes into the match. Senior Kenny Afolabi nearly added his second goal of the season in the 16
th minute, but his shot was deflected away, before junior
Mateo Rodriguez's shot sailed wide left. Quincy was awarded a free kick just a minute later, which saw Richard Monge lob a cross-field pass into the box. The pass was fielded by Mathias Bringedal, and he dumped it off to Stan Cargill right in front of the net, and his shot sailed into the back of the net.
Junior
Wilmer Canales responded with a shot on goal just a minute later to no avail, and junior
Dexter Garrett also nearly scored with his shot on goal in the 30
th minute. The Peacocks were awarded a corner kick in the 36
th minute, where they had a great opportunity to tie the game. Junior
Alejandro Sanchez made a perfect pass to freshman
Nikola Momcilovic, who scored the first goal of his collegiate career on a header into the right side of the goal.
Quincy was able to take the lead six minutes into the second half, as Joao Pedro Amaral dribbled past two defenders, and fired a perfect shot into the goal to boost the Hawks into the lead. Cardoso would add his second save five minutes later and he recorded two more in the 81
st and 86
th minute to finish with five on the day. The Peacocks had one last chance to tie the game in the 89
th minute, but their shot sailed over the net and Quincy was able to pull out a 2-1 win.
The Peacocks will be back in Missouri for meetings with Rockhurst and William Jewell. UIU faces Rockhurst on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. and William Jewell on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2:30 p.m.
