The Peacocks kicked off conference competition on the highest possible note, as they overpowered the Lewis Flyers on the road in a 2-1 victory.
Sophomore
Haylie Hutchinson was on fire to start the game, recording a shot on goal a minute into the action before adding another shot in the 13
th minute. Hutchinson attempted her third shot in the 22
nd minute which sailed past the goalie into the back of the net to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead. Freshman
Jordan Goldstein and
Maile Kehano each assisted on the play which gave Goldstein two assists on the season and Kehano a team-leading three assists. The Flyers had two opportunities to try and tie the game in the first half, but the Peacocks stellar defense recorded a team save in the 34
th minute and junior
Isabelle Wagner garnered her first save of the game in the 41
st minute.
The Flyers recorded the first shot of the second half which was off target in the 54
th minute. UIU was able to pick apart Lewis' defense in the 76
th minute, and when they had a great opportunity to score, they were fouled inside the box and given a penalty kick. Goldstein attempted the P.K. firing a strike into the goal to give the Peacocks a 2-0 lead. The result gave Goldstein both a goal and an assist in the match, which she has accomplished twice in three games to start her collegiate career.
Lewis was able to cut the UIU lead to one, on a goal from Breanna Culver in the 79
th minute, before being awarded a penalty kick just a minute later, where their shot was off target. The Flyers had one last chance to tie the game with 20 seconds remaining, but Wagner recorded a save on the left side of the goal, to secure the Peacocks 2-1 victory over a team that finished nine spots higher than them in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Peacocks will look to add another victory as they host the Indianapolis Greyhounds on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 12 p.m.
