Peacocks Sweep Hawks to Conclude Homestand

The Peacocks excelled on both ends of the field in their double header matchup against the Quincy Hawks, as they picked up consecutive wins by a score of 5-2 in game one and 11-8 in game two.

Game One
Delaney Vetter struck out the first batter she faced swinging, and she added another strikeout to close out the second without allowing a hit in either inning. Laila Pelds hit a single up the middle to start the bottom of the second, and she advanced to second base on a Reagan Church single down the left side. With two outs, Addyson Alber recorded a double out to center field, bringing both runners home to give the Peacocks an early 2-0 lead.

Quincy began the top of the third with a single to the pitcher, before taking advantage of an error to advance their runner into scoring position. The Peacocks forced a ground out to first base, but Quincy was able to score on the play, cutting the lead to one. Vetter followed that up by striking out the next batter and she added another strikeout in the fourth.

Kylie Doty's keen eye resulted in her being walked at the bottom of the fourth inning, and she advanced to third on a single to center field by Taylor Sedam. Church hit an RBI single to right field, resulting in a Doty run while advancing Sedam to third. Ari Charles then added a sacrifice fly out to right field which brought Sedam home to boost the Peacocks lead to 4-1.

Vetter forced three quick outs in the fifth and she struck out another two batters to close out the top half of the sixth inning. Sedam got on base on a walk at the bottom of the sixth inning, before advancing to second on a single to left field by Hannah Bridgewater. With two outs, Charles recorded another RBI as her single out to left field led to Sedam's second run of the day.
The Hawks were able to add a home run at the bottom of the seventh and found themselves with a bases loaded opportunity with one out, down 5-2. Quincy hit a pop fly to Charles in center field and Charles' laser throw to home was caught by Alber, who tagged the runner out as she slid into home to seal the victory on a thrilling double play.

Vetter struck out six batters on the day, allowing five hits with two runs. Sedam scored a team-high two runs and Alber posted a career-high mark with three RBIs.

Game Two
Rae VanMilligan recorded the Peacocks first hit of the day on a single to right field at the bottom of the first. Pelds then hit a home run right over the center field wall to give the Peacocks an early 2-0 lead. Quincy opened the second with a double to right field, before following that up with an RBI single to the left field wall. The UIU lead did not last long as Ryann Stoudt hit a two-run homer to center field to put the Hawks back in the lead by a score of 3-2.

Pelds opened the fourth inning with her second home run of the day, which sailed over the right center wall for her team-best fifth home run on the season. Doty and Sedam hit a pair of doubles out to center field with Sedam hitting an RBI as Doty's run gave the Peacocks the lead once again. Kaitlin Foral added a single which brought Sedam to third and Elliott Pomeroy hit a single to the pitcher as well, which resulted in an RBI. With the bases loaded, Serah Shafer hit an RBI single to left field as Foral's run boosted the Peacocks lead to 6-3.

Pelds, Doty and Bridgewater each posted singles at the bottom of the sixth to load the bases for UIU. With two outs, Pomeroy recorded a single to second base, accumulating two RBIs as Doty and pinch runner, Mikayla Brown scored on the play. A day after breaking the single season record for most triples in a season, Charles added another triple to right field, also picking up two RBIs as Pomeroy and Bridgewater reached home plate.

The Hawks were able to cut the lead to four in the sixth inning, highlighted by a double and RBI single to start the inning. A pair of defensive errors led to consecutive runs before the Peacocks forced a fly out to center to keep a 10-6 lead. VanMilligan singled up the middle at the bottom of the sixth before Pelds recorded her fourth hit of the game on a double to the left field wall. With the bases loaded, Sedam hit a single right up the middle, bringing VanMilligan home to push the lead to 11-6.

Quincy recorded three straight singles at the top of the seventh to load the bases with two outs. The Hawks were able to cut into the Peacock lead with a two RBI single up the middle, which made it an 11-8 game. After recording a save in game one, the Peacocks once again put Abby Buckman on the mound where she forced a pop up to first base for out number three.

Pelds hit a perfect 4-4 in the game for the second day in a row, scoring two runs and hitting three RBIs. Doty and VanMilligan each added two runs of their own and Pomeroy recorded a career-high with three RBIs in the game.

The Peacocks will hit the road for a pair of double headers against Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday, Apr. 13 and McKendree on Sunday, Apr. 14. Both matchups are set to begin at 12 and 2 p.m.
