The Peacocks perfect season at home came to an end as the Rockhurst Hawks were able to secure the victory in the double header by a score of 2-0 in game one and 7-5 in game two.
Ari Charles cemented her name into the UIU record books in game two as she hit her eighth triple on the season, breaking a 23-year old record set by Chyanne Kleve in 2001.
Game One
Charles singled to first base to start the first inning and she would later advance to third before the Hawks were able to close out the inning with a strikeout. Rockhurst hit a double to start the second inning and a single up the middle put runners on first and third. Maya Gallagher hit a two RBI double out to the center field wall, to give the Hawks an early lead.
Delaney Vetter responded by striking out the next batter swinging, to give her three strikeouts through the first two innings of action. Vetter pitched another strikeout at the top of the third, struck out consecutive batters in the fourth, and struck out two batters swinging in the fifth. Charles recorded the Peacocks final hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a single out to left field before Rockhurst would force a lineout to end the inning.
Rockhurst won the low scoring affair by a score of 2-0, where they put together five hits as a team. Vetter struck out ten batters on the day, which she has done four times this season. Charles had a solid day at the plate, hitting 2-3 with two singles.
Game Two
Rockhurst jumped to an early lead in game two on an RBI double out to left field before
Abby Buckman struck out her second batter in the first to end the inning. Charles once again got on base during her first at bat, where she hit her record-breaking triple, out to center field.
Serah Shafer reached first on a fielder's choice out at home, and she proceeded to steal second. With a runner in scoring position,
Laila Pelds launched a home run over the left field wall to give the Peacocks a 2-1 lead.
The Hawks took advantage of a walk to start the third, as they hit an RBI double out to center field. They added another RBI single out to right field, taking back the lead by a score of 3-2.
Rae VanMilligan's keen eye resulted in her being walked at the bottom of the third inning, and she advanced to third on a single to left field by Pelds.
Kylie Doty's sacrifice fly to right field brought VanMilligan home which tied the game at the end of the third.
Rockhurst opened the fifth with a single out to left field, before scoring on an RBI double out to the center field wall. With two outs and the Peacocks down by one, Pelds posted her third hit of the game on a single to center field. Doty came through in the clutch during the next at bat, hitting a home run over the right center field wall to put the Peacocks back in the lead by a score of 5-4.
The lead did not last long for the Peacocks, as Rockhurst hit a home run at the top of the sixth and took advantage of a defensive error to take a 6-5 lead. They added another homer at the top of the seventh, which sealed the victory by a score of 7-5.
Laila Pelds hit a perfect 4-4 in the game, scoring two runs with two RBIs and a home run.
Ari Charles hit 2-4 on her record setting day while
Kylie Doty recorded a team-high three RBIs with one hit and one run.
The Peacocks will conclude their homestand tomorrow with a double header against Quincy at 12 and 2 p.m.
