The Peacocks put together a successful home opening day against William Jewell as UIU won game one by a score of 9-3 and followed that up with a 2-1 victory in game two.
Game One
The Cardinals opened the first inning with a double to center field and proceeded to load the bases and score their first run of the game on consecutive walks. Following a strikeout by
Delaney Vetter, William Jewell scored on a single out to left field and took a 3-0 lead on a wild pitch. With runners on second and third, Vetter struck out back-to-back batters looking to end the top half of the inning.
Ari Charles hit a single out to right field and she advanced to second on a single by
Serah Shafer.
Rae VanMilligan launched a double out to the right field wall, which brought Charles home and advanced Shafer to third.
Laila Pelds hit an RBI ground out to second, advancing VanMilligan to third while bringing Shafer to home plate.
Kylie Doty added an RBI double out to center field and a run by VanMilligan tied the game at three apiece. With two outs, the Peacocks were able to take the lead as Doty scored on an RBI grounder to first base by
Taylor Sedam.
Hannah Bridgewater added to Upper Iowa's lead at the bottom of the second inning, by launching a home run over the left field wall. Vetter struck out two more batters looking at the top of the fourth, before recording her seventh strikeout of the game in the fifth.
VanMilligan hit a single to center field to lead off the fifth inning, and she was able to advance to third on a throwing error. Pelds hit her second RBI on a single out to left field as VanMilligan's run boosted the UIU lead to 6-3. Doty then reached on a fielder's choice and Sedam hit a single out to right field. With runners on first and second,
Reagan Church hit her fourth home run of the season over the left center field wall to push the Peacocks lead to six.
With one out and runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, the Peacocks forced a groundout double play to secure a 9-3 victory. Vetter pitched a complete game where she recorded eight strikeouts and posted an ERA of 3.0. Upper Iowa added 13 hits as a team with VanMilligan, Pelds, Church and Bridgewater each recording two. VanMilligan and Doty each scored two runs and Church hit a team-high three RBIs.
Game Two
Abby Buckman took the mound for the Peacocks in game two, quickly forcing three outs in both the first and second inning. WJC recorded their first hit atop the third, but Buckman responded with her second strikeout and forced a groundout to herself to end the inning.
With runners on first and third and one out on the board, William Jewell hit a pop fly up to second base. Shafer caught the pop up and forced out number three at home plate as
Kaitlin Foral was able to make the diving tag.
Doty hit a single out to right field to lead off the fourth, and she advanced to second on a single by Sedam. Bridgewater was able to reach first on an error while Doty scored the first run of the game on the play. Foral added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Sedam home to give the Peacocks a 2-0 lead.
William Jewell hit a solo home run over the left field wall at the start of the fifth, but Buckman struck out another two batters to help the Peacocks maintain their 2-1 lead. She forced a three-up, three-down inning in the sixth but the Cardinals found themselves with an opportunity to tie the game with runners on first and second in the top of the seventh. With two outs, WJC hit a pop fly out to first base, which was caught by Pelds to seal the 2-1 victory.
Buckman struck out four batters during her complete game, allowing only five hits and one run on the day. The Peacocks recorded six hits as a team and Foral hit their only RBI in game two.
The Peacocks upcoming home double header against Rockhurst has been moved from Sunday to Monday, Apr. 8 at 12 and 2 p.m. UIU will then host Quincy on Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 12 and 2 p.m. once again.
