Miners Take Two Against Peacocks

The Peacocks surrendered a pair of games in Rolla, Mo. to the Miners in an 8-2 and 3-2 decision. They moved to 8-22 on the year and 5-14 in the GLVC. Upper Iowa faces Missouri S&T in their last game of the series tomorrow at 12 p.m.

GAME ONE, UIU-2, S&T-8

The Peacocks dropped game one of the series against the Miners in an 8-2 decision. Gabe Bombardier collected two hits to lead the Peacocks while the team recorded eight as a unit. The Miners totaled eight hits.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, with Upper Iowa striking first. The visitors tallied three hits to fuel their only two runs of the game, all within the first frame. A single down the right field line from Gunnar Wicklund brought in Ethan Sawyer, who reached base with a single. Shortly after, Bombardier made it around to home plate after getting on with a single up the middle, giving UIU the early 2-0 lead.

The Miners scored two runs in the bottom of the inning after a single up the middle from Souza, granting him two RBIs on the play.

The home team tacked on three more runs to their total in the third inning and another additional run in the fourth, giving them the 6-2 advantage.

Upper Iowa had the bases loaded in the top of the fourth after recording two hits, but were unable to bring anyone around.

S&T tallied another two runs in the bottom of the fifth after distributing three hits, giving them the 8-2 lead that held for the remainder of the contest.

Isaiah Maes (2-3) threw for 4.1 innings and allowed eight runs, seven which were earned. He struck out three batters and walked three. Brennan Sefrit tossed 1.2 innings in relief.

GAME TWO, UIU-2, S&T-3

UIU held a 2-1 lead for a handful of innings in game two, but the Miners crept in and snagged two runs in the bottom of the seventh to overtake the lead and come out on top, 3-2.

The Miners were first on the scoreboard as they notched one run in the second frame. The Peacocks were able to knot the game up at one run apiece in the top of the third after a groundout to second base knocked in Cael Luzum, who reached on a single.

The Peacocks grabbed their second run in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice. Their 2-1 advantage held until the bottom of the seventh inning, where S&T mustered up two runs to come out on top.

Bryce Hall, Brock Zimmer, Gabe Bombardier and Luzum each recorded one hit.

Abraham Sanchez (3-4) threw six innings for Upper Iowa, allowing six hits and three runs, two of them earned. Jason Jennerjohn tossed 0.2 innings in relief.
