Upper Iowa baseball picked up one win on day two of competition against the UMSL Tritons. They won the first contest of Sunday's doubleheader in a 10-2 decision before falling in game two in a 10-8 final.
The Peacocks wrap up their 2024 campaign in a home series with the Truman State Bulldogs next weekend. They play a single game on Friday, May 2, a double header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
GAME ONE UIU-10, UMSL-2
Despite the starting pitcher for the Tritons ringing up seven Peacock batters, UIU was able to bring home their first win of the series in a 10-2 decision. They tallied eight hits as a unit, led by
Gunnar Wicklund and
Justin Baehler with two each.
Missouri-St.Louis was the first to score as they collected two runs in the top of the third inning.
UIU responded in a big way in the bottom of the fourth inning as they recorded five runs behind three hits, one of them a Wicklund home run, his second of the weekend.
Bryce Hall scored the next play on a throwing error. Baehler singled through the right side to score one, and a single to center field from
Ethan Sawyer brought around two.
The Peacocks kept their momentum going as they hauled in three runs in the fifth inning and another two runs in the sixth, going ahead 10-2.
Brayden Deering (1-2) earned his first win on the mound this season. He pitched four innings, allowing one hit and two runs, neither of them earned.
Brennan Sefrit threw three innings of relief, surrendering two hits and zero runs.
GAME TWO UIU-8, UMSL-10
Upper Iowa saw steady and consistent scoring throughout game two, putting numbers up on the scoreboard in six different innings. Missouri-St. Louis combated this with two innings of scoring four runs that helped boost their total to pick up a victory in the second contest.
Ethan Sawyer led the Peacocks on offense going 3-3 at the plate while
Bryce Hall and
Paul Safranski each notched one home run.
UIU held a 6-1 after four complete innings, but allowed the Tritons to knock in four runs in the top of the fifth frame to trail by one run. They overtook the lead in the top of the seventh inning after tallying another four runs to go ahead 9-6.
The Peacocks responded with one run in the bottom of the seventh as
Evan Hubatch brought
Brock Zimmer home after reaching base on a fielder's choice, trailing the Tritons 9-7.
Both teams scored their last run of the game in the eighth inning, giving UMSL their third win of the series by a 10-8 decision.
Jason Jennerjohn started the game and threw for 4.2 innings allowing five hits and five runs.
Thane Meiners (0-3),
Dante Schmid and
Carson Dupuis each threw innings in relief out of the bullpen.
