In the final game of the series between the Prairie Stars and the Peacocks in Springfield, Ill., the home team prevailed in a 9-3 decision. UIU tallied eight hits while UIS recorded 12.
Illinois Springfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the conclusion of the first inning. They tallied two hits and took advantage of an Upper Iowa error in the infield.
UIS added another run in the second frame after a single to right field knocked in Blemler, who reached base on a walk.
The Prairie Stars stretched their lead to 7-0 after the fourth inning where they tacked on another three runs, fueled by three hits. The defense escaped the inning with two runners still on base.
Upper Iowa scored their first run of the afternoon in the top of the sixth inning.
Ethan Sawyer and
Gunnar Wicklund started things off, each recording a single. With two outs on the board,
Bryce Hall batted in Sawyer on a single to right field.
The home team added another three runs in the bottom of the seventh to lead 10-1.
The Peacocks responded with one run in the top of the eighth after
Brock Zimmer batted in Sawyer, who got on base with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. In the top of the ninth, a home run from
Gabe Bombardier boosted the Peacocks to trail 10-3. The UIS defense executed three outs to take game four, winning the overall series 3-1.
Brayden Deering (0-2) started on the mound for UIU. He threw for 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs.
Brennan Sefrit (2.2 IP) and
Thane Meiners (1.2 IP) both came out of the bull pen to pitch.
Upper Iowa will play the remainder of their regular season games at home. They are set to take on Missouri-St. Louis on Robertson Woods Field next weekend (Apr. 26-28).
