Upper Iowa baseball defeated Illinois Springfield in the second game of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in a 9-1 decision, collecting their first win since Mar. 30. They earned a split on the day after dropping the first game 9-1.
The last game of the series against the Prairie Stars begins at 12 p.m. tomorrow.
GAME ONE- UIU-1, UIS-9
The Prairie Stars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind two home runs. They tacked on another five runs in the fourth inning behind four hits to stretch their advantage out to 9-0.
Singles from
Cael Luzum and
Evan Hubatch in the seventh inning led to Upper Iowa's only run of game one after
Thane Meiners batted Luzum around.
The Peacocks recorded six hits and one RBI while the Prairie Stars notched 12 hits and nine RBIs.
Brady Stevens (2-4) opened the game on the bump for the Peacocks, throwing 3.0 innings. He allowed 11 hits and eight earned runs while striking out four batters
Nick Hartje (1.2) and
Gabe Olson (1.2) both came out of the bullpen. The duo allowed one hit, one run and rung up four batters.
GAME TWO-UIU-9, UIS-4
Upper Iowa saw their offensive efficiency in the first half of the second contest, scoring eight of their nine runs in the first three innings.
In the first inning, UIU batted in three after executing three singles and one walk. They continued with their scoring ways in the second inning with another two runs after a home run from
Gunnar Wicklund. Additionally, they recorded another run in the third inning on Wicklund's second home run of the afternoon.
Illinois Springfield retaliated with their first two runs of the game in the fifth frame, cutting into the lead and trailing 8-2.
A sacrifice fly from
Chase Chappel in the sixth inning knocked in UIU's final run of the day to total nine runs on the board. UIS scored for their last time of the afternoon in the bottom of the same frame, trailing the visitors by five runs for the remainder of the contest.
Wicklund led the Peacocks on offense with three hits and five RBIs. Chappel and Zimmer both contributed two hits.
Paxton Gravlin picked up his first win of the season on the mound after throwing four innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. During his tenure, he struck out five batters and walked three.
Jason Jennerjohn pitched 3.0 innings, surrendering five hits and one earned run.
