The Peacocks faced off with the Flyers in a double header on Saturday, surrendering both games by scores of 13-7 and 10-2. Upper Iowa will conclude their series with Lewis tomorrow in a single nine-inning contest at 12 p.m.
GAME ONE, UIU-7, LU-13
Game one was a high-scoring affair, as both teams saw an inning during the game where they scored seven runs. The Peacocks put up all seven of their runs in the first inning and were unable to bring anything around after that. They were ahead of the Flyers 7-5 going into the third frame until the visitors tallied seven runs and took over the lead 12-7.
Lewis scored their final run in the sixth inning, commanding a 13-7 lead that held for the remainder of the contest.
Upper Iowa's first-inning frenzy was fueled by nine hits, eight singles and a double from
Gunnar Wicklund.
The Peacocks tallied 14 hits as a unit in game one, led by
Brock Zimmer who went 4-4.
Gabe Bombardier and
Ethan Sawyer each contributed two hits.
Isaiah Maes started on the mound for the home team and pitched for two innings, allowing eight runs, seven of them earned.
JJ Vargas (0-1) threw one inning in relief and surrendered five hits and four earned runs.
Paxton Gravlin finished off game one with four innings, giving up two hits, one run and ringing up three batters.
GAME TWO, UIU-5, LU-10
The Flyers jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the top of the second inning when the Peacocks brought in their first run of game two in the bottom of the same frame. A single from
Cael Luzum up the middle knocked in
Chase Chappel to cut the deficit to three runs.
Both teams each brought in one run in the third, the home team's coming from a home run from Wicklund.
LU added five runs between the fourth and fifth innings and UIU recorded one, stretching the visitor's lead to 10-3.
Upper Iowa scored two runs in the seventh inning, fueled by two hits from
Ethan Sawyer and
Bryce Hall, cutting into the Lewis lead but falling short by five runs to conclude the game (10-5).
Sawyer led the team with two hits out of their seven in game two. Hall recorded a team-high two RBIs.
Brennan Sefrit (0-3) and
Gabe Olson split time on the mound, allowing a combined 16 hits and striking out five batters. Sefrit started the game on the mound and gave up eight runs while Olson allowed two.
