UIU baseball concluded their time in the state of Kansas with a double header versus Fort Hays State. The Peacocks were defeated 11-1 in the first game and came up just shy in the second contest as they led the game 5-0, but surrendered their lead, dropping in a 6-5 decision to the Tigers.
The team heads to St. Louis, Mo. for their first GLVC series against Maryville. Their first game against the Saints is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a double header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
Game one UIU-1, FHS-11
The Peacocks were the first to make their way onto the scoreboard in game one, but were unable to add additional runs in the innings to come. Their lone run was scored in the first inning as
Bryce Hall drilled a ball to right-center and earned two bases. Soon after, he advanced to third on a passed ball and would make his way across home plate as
Gunnar Wicklund put a ball into play and was thrown out at first, but collected the only RBI of the game for UIU.
The Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom of the first without recording a single hit, as six of their batters were walked and one error was committed by the Peacock defense.
No runs were put up in the third inning, but the home team would soon tack on another seven runs to their total; two runs in innings three through six except for the fifth inning, where they brought in one.
Upper Iowa recorded five hits and one RBI. Fort Hays collected four hits and six RBI's while being walked 17 times. The Peacocks recorded four fielding errors as the Tigers came away with a clean sheet.
Carson Dupuis (0-1) was on the mound for UIU and picked up the loss in game one. He threw 2.0 innings, allowing six runs, striking out two and walking nine.
Game two UIU-5, FHS-6
The Peacocks got off to a hot start in game two as they recorded five runs in the first inning, but were unable to add any additional runs throughout the remainder of the game. TheTigers slowly chipped away at the deficit and tallied three runs in the fifth, one in the fourth and another two in the sixth to pass Upper Iowa 6-5 and win their second game of the day.
UIU saw four hits in the first inning from
Gabe Bombardier,
Steve Marhefke,
Evan Hubatch and
Paul Safranski to bring in their five runs.
Upper Iowa had the bases loaded in the top of the fourth as Safranski and Hubatch recorded their second hits of the day, but they were unable to bring anyone around.
In the top of the seventh, the Peacocks had two outs as
Bryce Hall came up to the plate and singled to left field. The UIU baserunner took off from second in an attempt to tie up the game, but was tagged out as the left fielder threw home and caught him at the plate to conclude the contest.
