UIU Baseball Surrenders Two Versus Maryville in St. Louis

The Peacocks battled the Saints in their first day of competition in St. Louis as they fell 10-0 in game one and 8-4 in game two. Upper Iowa is back on the field tomorrow as they take on Maryville in another double header, the first game at 12 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. contest.

GAME ONE: UIU-0, MU-10

UIU allowed MU to outscore them 10-0 in the first game behind nine hits. Their first run came in the second inning as their runner on first arrived at second on a wild pitch and advanced to home after two balks.

The Peacocks had three on base three outs prior to the Saints scoring their first run. In the top of the second, Gunnar Wicklund and JJ Vargas each singled to put two runners on. An error by the shortstop loaded the bases with one out. The MU defense collected two more outs before UIU could bring anyone home, leaving three stranded.

Maryville brought around another two in the third inning for the 3-0 lead. A home run in the fourth inning put another three runs on the board for the Saints, pushing their advantage out to 6-0.

The Peacocks had a runner on second in the top of the sixth, but were unable to convert any runs.

The Saints tacked on four more runs to their total in the bottom of the sixth inning, fueled by their second home run of the day. The 10-0 score remained in the top of the seventh inning, giving the Saints the victory in game one.

Isaiah Maes (1-1) was on the mound for UIU today, throwing for 5.1 innings before being relieved by Paxton Gravlin. Maes allowed nine runs and struck out six batters in his outing.

GAME TWO: UIU-4, MU-8

Upper Iowa chipped away at the Maryville lead in game two after compiling four runs between the sixth and seventh inning, but came up short and fell by a four-run deficit. The Saints collected the majority of their runs in the early part of the contest, jumping out to a 7-0 advantage by the fourth inning.

The Peacocks recorded seven hits in game two and were led at the plate by Bryce Hall, who went 2-4 and tallied one of the team's four RBI's.

UIU put up one run in the top of the sixth on a single to center field from Wicklund, bringing around Hall who reached first base on a single to center fielder.

Three hits in the seventh inning ignited a Peacock comeback as they chipped away at the lead and cut it to four runs, but came up shy in overtaking the Saints and gave them their second win of the day.

Brady Stevens (0-1) and Gabe Olsen both pitched for three evenings in game two. Stevens allowed six hits and five runs, as Olsen gave up three hits and three runs. The duo combined for four strikeouts on the day.
