The Peacock baseball team was defeated by the Hornets 12-0 on Tuesday evening in Emporia, Kansas. The Peacocks now sit at 3-3 on the season with six games remaining this week. They compete with Fort Hays State in a double header on Wednesday and a GLVC series with the University of Maryville on Friday-Sunday.
ESU got off to an early lead as they recorded three hits and brought in five runs in the first inning. They capitalized the two errors from the UIU defense, helping them jump out to a five-run advantage.
The Hornets added three runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and another three in the sixth, jumping out to a 12-0 lead and securing a victory by the end of the seventh inning.
Upper Iowa tallied two hits on the day, a single from both
Brock Zimmer and
Gunnar Wicklund.
Emporia State was paced at the plate by Joe Daneff, who went 2-2 and collected five RBI's.
Abraham Sanchez (1-1) picked up the loss on the mound for Upper Iowa while Greg Ross threw for the Hornets and allowed two hits and zero runs while striking out six batters.
The first game against the Tigers of Fort Hays State starts at 1 p.m. on Wednesday with the second contest to follow.
