Peacocks Travel South for Cluster of Games

THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK BASEBALL… Upper Iowa baseball has a jam-packed week of play as they face three different opponents across eight different games. The Peacocks start off in Kansas as they take on Emporia State on Monday and Tuesday, with both games starting at 3 p.m. They battle Fort Hays State the next day in a double header, starting at 1 p.m. UIU rounds out their week with their first GLVC encounter, as they head to the state of Missouri to test Maryville. They play a single game on Friday at 2 p.m., a double header on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. and another single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

RECAP OF THE LAST ACTION…. The Peacocks went 3-1 against UW-Parkside last week as they played a double header in Fayette on Sunday and another in Kenosha, Wis. on Tuesday. UWP picked up game one on Robertson Woods Field in an 11-5 final behind 13 hits, while Upper Iowa rallied in game two and defeated the visitors 8-3 behind six hits, including home runs from Gabe Bombardier and Gunnar Wicklund
 
The team nabbed two additional wins against the Rangers on Tuesday, defeating them 8-7 in game one and 13-7 in game two. Upper Iowa smacked four home runs in the second contest to aid in their six-run victory, two from Jared Hoodjer and one from both Gabe Bombardier and Bryce Hall
 
TEAM LEADERS… Gunnar Wickland paces the team at the plate as he is hitting .500 in his eight at-bats. In his four hits, he's tallied one home run and one double. Mike Gentile Jr. and Bryce Hall also have recorded four hits so far this season, while drilling one home run. Jared Hoodjer and Gabe Bombardier lead the squad in RBI's as they have both brought around five.
 
Isaiah Maes, Gabe Olson and Abraham Sanchez each picked up a win on the mound last weekend for the Peacocks. Maes threw seven innings and allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out five batters. Olson threw four innings and rang up five batters, three hits and two runs. Sanchez was on the hill for four innings and allowed four hits and four runs, two of those which were earned. He sent back four batters to the dugout during his duration. 
 
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION… Emporia State is 10-8 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. Most recently, they faced Northwest Missouri State, where they picked up two wins in the series, and Washburn where they picked up one win. They are led at the plate by Kayden Williams who is hitting .400 on the year with four home runs, five doubles and two triples. 
 
Fort Hays is 12-6 on the year and 2-4 in the MIAA. In their most recent matchup against Rogers State, they picked up a 9-4 win in extra innings, but fell 11-1 and 11-4 in their other contests. Jose Cintron leads the team at the plate with a .328 average, followed by Brady Kruetzer with .324, who also leads the team in home runs with four. 
 
The Maryville baseball team has a 7-5 record and will face Upper Iowa in their first conference contests of the season. The Saints picked up two wins over the weekend, trumping Hillsdale College twice with scores of 10-0 and 14-4. They fell to Saginaw Valley State 10-2 on Saturday. Andy Bunton paces the team with a .412 average at the plate. Colin Bergmann has recorded 13 RBI's for the Saints while tallying a team-high 17 hits, two of them being home runs. 
 
DOWN THE STRETCH… The Peacocks have a quick turnaround as they return to Robertson Woods Field on Tuesday, Mar. 12 to host William Jewell College at 2 p.m. They face NSIC member Augustana on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Their week concludes with a conference series against Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo. Mar. 15-17.
