Upper Iowa came out on top 14-7 against McKendree in game four to split the series 2-2. The Peacocks scored eight out of their 14 runs in the eighth and ninth innings of the contest, finishing the weekend off on a high note. UIU tallied 15 hits and seven RBIs while MCK collected 11 hits and seven RBIs.
Gunnar Wicklund and
Gabe Bombardier led the team with three hits each while Even Hubatch and
Bryce Hall both notched a home run.
Abraham Sanchez (3-3) started on the mound for Upper Iowa and picked up the win after throwing for five innings, allowing six hits and three runs, two of them earned.
Jason Jennerjohn (3.0 IP) and
Steve Marhefke made an appearance out of the bullpen.
UIU jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the conclusion of the second inning. The score held until the fourth inning when MCK brought in another two runs to trail 4-3.
The Peacocks added another two runs in the sixth inning to stretch their cushion out to a three-run advantage (6-3).
The visitors added four runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to grab a 14-3 lead. McKendree came to life in the bottom of the ninth as they collected four runs of their own, but came up short in their comeback effort as Upper Iowa grabbed the convincing win.
The doubleheader against Emporia State, originally scheduled for Monday, has been canceled due to inclement weather. The Peacocks are back in action next Friday in a four-game series against Missouri S&T in Rolla, Mo. (April 5-7).
