Upper Iowa baseball fell to Rockhurst 4-2 in the final game of their weekend series in Kansas City, Mo. Despite the two-run loss on Sunday, the Peacocks won the series 3-1. UIU tallied eight hits and were led at the plate by
Ethan Sawyer who went 3-4 at the plate.
Bryce Hall and
JJ Vargas added two hits each. RU recorded ten hits.
Brennan Sefrit (0-2) started the game on the mound for the Peacocks, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Jason Jennerjon threw three innings in relief, as he gave up three hits and one run. The Hawks' pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.
The home team did the bulk of their scoring in the first part of the contest. They brought in one run in the first, second and third inning for the early 3-0 lead.
The Peacocks had a runner on third base in the second, third and fourth inning, but were unable to bring anyone across home plate. Their first run of the game came in the seventh inning on an RBI single to right field from Sawyer.
Rockhurst answered in the bottom of the seventh with their fourth and final run of the day, commanding a 4-1 advantage.
UIU had runners on second and third in the eighth inning, but were unable to convert. A sacrifice fly from
Gunnar Wicklund brought in their second run, cutting the lead to 4-2. The Peacocks' comeback effort was cut short as they struck out twice to end the inning and give the Hawks their lone victory of the series.
UIU will head to Liberty, Mo. to take on William Jewell in a nine-inning contest starting at 3 p.m.
