The Peacocks started off their jam-packed week of play on Robertson Woods Field against conference foe William Jewell. They battled for 11 innings, but came up just shy of a positive result, falling 10-9.
Gunnar Wicklund led the team at the plate with three hits in four at-bats, while
Jared Hoodjer recorded two home runs and four RBI's.
The Cardinals got out to a 2-0 jump in the top of the first inning, but the Peacocks retaliated with five runs of their own fueled by three hits, highlighted by a two-run homer from
Jared Hoodjer.
Gabe Bombardier added a triple and
Ethan Sawyer snagged two bases on a double to left field.
Both teams went without scoring until the fourth inning when WJC added one to their total, cutting the deficit to 5-3. Their lone run was put on the scoreboard after advancing home on wild pitch.
William Jewell took over the lead in the fifth inning as they collected an additional three runs behind two hits. Their first trip all around the bases happened as they tagged up on third to come home on a fly ball hit to the outfield. Their two other runs were brought in on a hit to right field, giving them the 6-5 lead by the end of the inning.
The Cardinals held a one-run lead until the bottom of the eighth until Hoodjer hit his second home run of the day over the left field fence.
Steve Marhefke followed up the long bomb with a single to center field, but was left stranded and the game stayed knotted up at 6-6.
In the top of the ninth, William Jewell hit a home run over the left field fence on the very first pitch, regaining their lead. With two outs on the scoreboard, a single to left field followed by a double to right field brought in an additional two runs, giving the visitors a 9-6 advantage.
With the Peacocks in a position where they needed to score at least three runs,
Gunnar Wicklund started the bottom of the ninth with a single to right field, followed by a single to left field from
Gabe Bombardier. With two on base,
JJ Vargas tattooed one down the third base line to knock in a run and trail the Cardinals 9-7 with zero outs.
Ethan Sawyer stepped up the plate and drilled one to left field, bringing around another run to trail 9-8.
Jared Hoodjer hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in the tying run.
The game seeped into extra innings as the Peacocks held at nine runs at the conclusion of the ninth inning. The Cardinals went three up, three down in the tenth, giving UIU an opportunity at the plate.
Upper Iowa had the bases loaded on two walks and an error by the William Jewell shortstop, but all three were left stranded, sending the game to the 11
th inning.
The Cardinals drilled a single to left field and the base runner moved to third after advancing on two ground outs. They scored their tenth run after a passed ball.
The home team was unable to put any runs on the board in the bottom of the 11th as they registered three straight outs.
Marcus Champagne (1-1) was given the loss on the mound. He threw for two innings, ringing up three batters while allowing three hits and one run.
Upper Iowa is back on their home field tomorrow as they host Augustana for one nine-inning contest at 1:30 p.m.
