Upper Iowa concluded Day Two of the the Lewis Flyer Invitational with a hard fought 5-4 game vs. the Parkside Rangers and a 4-0 game to the Hillsdale College Chargers.
Game One vs. Parkside Rangers
The Rangers put together a four-run first inning where they were able to record three RBI singles and capitalize on a stolen base. Sophomore
Taylor Sedam singled to center field to start the second inning and successfully stole second for a third time in a row on the year. Sophomore
Kylie Doty singled through the left side of the field to advance Sedam to third, but the Rangers were able to force an out at second to end the inning. An RBI single to right field would give Parkside a 5-0 lead, to end the bottom of the second.
Sophomore
McKenna Morris was walked at the top of the third and she scored UIU's first run of the game as senior
Ari Charles recorded her third triple of the year on an RBI to right field. Sophomore
Serah Shafer pulled off a successful sacrifice bunt, which brought Charles home to make it a 5-2 game. The score would remain the same through the next three innings and the Peacocks had one last chance to complete their comeback at the top of the seventh. Charles was walked to start the inning and she would advance to third on a single by Shafer. Senior
Rae VanMilligan hit an RBI grounder to shortstop which led to Charles scoring her second run of the game. Shafer followed that up by scoring on an error, but the Rangers were able to force a groundout to seal the 5-4 win.
Game Two vs. Hillsdale College Chargers
Senior
Delaney Vetter opened game two by striking out two batters in the first inning before putting together a perfect inning as she struck out all three batters she faced in the second. Charles started the game 2-2 as she hit a single to center field to start the fourth inning and Shafer added a single to second. The Chargers defense was able to force a pair of ground outs to end the inning and the game remained tied at 0-0.
Hillsdale was able to load the bases at the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring their first run of the game on a single to center field. A single to first base gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead, and they were able to push their lead to four on a sacrifice fly to the outfield. The Peacocks were unable to score in the seventh, ending the game with a score of 4-0.
The Peacocks will close out the tourney tomorrow with a double header against Minnesota State University Moorhead at 3:30 and Bemidji State at 6 p.m.
