Production at the Plate Propels Warriors over Peacocks

Upper Iowa has wrapped up the Sioux Center Tournament with a 1-3 record as they were unable to get the best of Winona State Warriors in a 12-3 and 9-1 game.

Game One
Winona State began the top of the first inning by scoring four ones, highlighted by a double to center field. Senior Rae VanMilligan doubled in the first inning and senior Laila Pelds recorded her ninth RBI of the season on a single that led to VanMilligan scoring UIU's first run of the day.

Sophomore Serah Shafer hit a single to center field to start the third inning before she successfully stole second. Pelds once again recorded an RBI single which made it a 7-2 game.

The Warriors opened the fourth inning with a walk and three hits in a row, which helped boost them to a 12-2 lead. Pelds would later add another single on a hit to right field which made her 3-3 at the plate in game one. Sophomore Taylor Sedam and freshman Addyson Alber each hit a single to load the bases in the bottom of the 5th. Senior Hannah Bridgewater hit an RBI single, which led to Pelds scoring the final run of the game.

Game Two
Winona State built on their momentum from game one, as they hit a two-run homer in the first inning and two RBI single's in the second. Freshman Elliott Pomeroy singled to center field to start the third inning, and she successfully stole second. The Warriors were able to get out of the inning on a pair of pop outs and built their lead to eight as they hit another home run.

Sophomore Kylie Doty hit a single to right field at the top of the 5th and was able to advance to second base on a passed ball. Faced with two outs, Senior Ari Charles launched a line drive to right field and picked up the RBI as Doty scored on the play. The Peacocks were able to force a double play at the bottom of the 5th inning, but were unable to overcome their deficit to Winona State as they picked up their fifth win in a row.

The Peacocks will travel to Rosemont, Ill. where they will be competing in the Lewis Flyer Dome Invitational. UIU will participate in six games over the tourney's three-day span.
