Peacocks Protect Prochaska Court by Overpowering Miners

Upper Iowa men's basketball made their way back into the win column as they snapped a three-game skid after defeating Missouri S&T 94-86 Thursday evening. The Peacocks improved to 15-8 overall and 10-5 in the GLVC.

UIU had three 20+ plus scorers in their victory over the Miners. They were led by Caleb Delzell with 23 points, followed by Jake Hilmer and Noah King with 22 and 21. The home team shot 54% (12-22) from beyond the arc, fueled by Delzell who went 4-5 and Nick Reid who netted 3-4.

The Peacocks trailed 9-0 to open the game and were forced to play catch up for the first ten minutes. A driving floater from King gave UIU their first lead at 22-21, which was a part of the home squad's 16-2 run. Upper Iowa nabbed back-to-back steals that helped electrify their scoring frenzy, one of them stimulating a fast break dunk from Kyle Hrncir

Upper Iowa led 46-35 at the half. Both teams were similar in shooting percentage, as S&T converted 15-32 (46.9%), while UIU was 15-31 (48.4%). The difference maker was in the distance as the Peacocks were 7-11 (63.6%) from long range while the Miners sank 2-9 (22.2%) beyond the arc.

The control belonged to Upper Iowa in the second half as they did not relinquish their lead. They extended their advantage to the largest of the evening as they were ahead 14 points, 55-41, after the first three minutes of the second half. Soon after, the Miners strung together ten straight points to pull behind by one point (62-61). Delzell then executed his own 5-0 burst to put some distance in between the two teams.

Upper Iowa went on an 8-2 run several plays later to push out their lead to 78-69 with just over seven minutes left to play. The Peacocks maintained their distance as Missouri S&T did not come closer than a five-point deficit for the remainder of the contest.

Hrncir ended the night with nine rebounds, seven points and four steals. Hilmer added to his high-scoring affair with five assists, while Reid concluded with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Peacocks are back in action on Saturday as they take on Maryville in Fayette at 3 p.m. for alumni day.
