Peacocks Unable to Conquer Flyers in Romeoville

Upper Iowa men's basketball entertained a close contest in the first half versus Lewis, but ran out of steam and surrendered to the Flyers in a 96-73 decision in Romeoville. The Peacocks moved to 14-8 overall and 9-5 in the GLVC, while the Flyers improved to 12-10 on the year and 8-6 in the conference.

UIU played from behind for most of the contest, holding a lead over Lewis for just over a minute of the game. The Peacocks saw their largest lead of two points in the first half as they held a 25-23 advantage, which was their last lead of the game. UIU concluded the opening stint trailing the home team by nine, 93-76.

The visitors shot 18% from three and 37% from the field in the first period, while Lewis netted 58.6% from the floor and 60% from beyond the arc. Jake Hilmer scored 20 points in the first half and finished the game with 31.

The Flyers kept their foot on the gas in the second half as they opened on a 7-2 run, until a Christian Haffner three-pointer brought them to a halt and pulled the Peacocks back to a deficit of 11. Kyle Hrncir connected on a driving layup with 12 minutes remaining that started an 11-0 burst for Upper Iowa, with nine of those points coming from Noah King as he connected on two fade-away jumpers, one three pointer and a pair of free throws.

UIU trailed LU by three points (60-57) with under ten minutes to play, but the Flyers retaliated with a 10-2 run three minutes later to keep out of reach. J. Hilmer netted a pair of free throws to stop their momentum, but went on a 14-4 burst to run away with the game.

Noah King tallied 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Kyle Hrncir recorded 12 points and hauled in eight off the glass.

UIU shot 36.3% (29-80) from the field and 17.2% (5-29) from long distance, as the Flyers converted 51.7% from the floor and 42.9% from three-point land.

The Peacocks are back at home next weekend as they host Missouri S&T on Thursday, Feb. 15 and Maryville on Saturday, Feb. 17.
