Peacocks Tie 2-2 in Clash with the Cardinals

Upper Iowa battled the William Jewell Cardinals to a 2-2 tie on the road.

Senior Daniel Pranger recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 13th minute, which was saved by Umberto DiCarlo. Following a save by junior JJ Gonzalez-Hayes, junior James Moody scored his first goal of the season, on an unassisted strike in the 24th minute. The Cardinals had two great chances to tie the game late in the half, but Gonzalez-Hayes recorded consecutive saves in the 40th and 43rd minutes.

The Peacocks subbed in freshman Julian Mesen in the 63rd minute and he made an immediate impact as he scored a goal just a minute later on a corner kick assist from junior Alejandro Sanchez. Mesen scored his second goal of the season on the play and Sanchez picked up his second assist which are both tied for team-highs.

Luck was on the Cardinals side in the 67th minute as Gonzalez-Hayes made a diving save in the 67th minute, but his deflection ended up at the feet of Tristan Bareotta, who scored an open shot on goal to cut the lead to one. William Jewell's aggressive attack in the closing minutes led to numerous shots on goal, which saw Gonzalez Hayes pick up saves in the 84th, 85th, and 86th minutes. He recorded his ninth save of the game with 50 seconds remaining, which is one shy of his career high.

With just five seconds left to play, WJC was fouled in the box, and they earned a penalty kick. Zach Nichols stepped up to take the kick and his shot sailed into the goal to tie the game at 2-2.

The Peacocks will return to Fayette to host Drury on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Southwest Baptist on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
