Upper Iowa opened their homestand with a 3-1 defeat to the Drury Panthers.
The Panthers earned their first chance to score in the 19
th minute as they were able to dribble past the Peacocks defense. They fired a shot on goal which was deflected away on a diving save by junior
JJ Gonzalez-Hayes. The deflection landed at the feet of Mason Platts, who fired his shot into the back of the net to put Drury in a 1-0 lead which they would maintain through the half.
Gonzalez-Hayes opened the second half with his third save of the game in the 52
nd minute and junior
Emir Basar attempted a shot on goal which was saved two minutes later. The Panthers were awarded a penalty kick after being fouled right inside the box and Joe Loughnane's shot sailed into the top right corner of the goal. The Peacocks had a great opportunity to cut into the lead on a crossfield pass to senior
Nozomu Kamei. With the goalie far out of the box, Kamei dribbled past him and fired a strike on target, but the Panthers defense made a phenomenal diving header save. They were then able to take a 3-0 lead on a goal which was scored by Lucas Schofield.
The Peacocks were awarded a free kick in the left corner right outside the box, after Kamei drew a foul. Junior
Emir Basar passed his free kick to junior
Dexter Garrett, and he headed his shot into the net, for the final goal of the game.
The Peacocks will take on Southwest Baptist at home on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
