Bulldogs Escape Fayette With Narrow Victory

The Upper Iowa football squad squared off against Truman State in their third GLVC contest of the season, where the Bulldogs outlasted the Peacocks 26-23 in a close contest. UIU shifted to 3-3 (2-1 GLVC), and TSU improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the league.

The Peacocks concluded the third quarter with a slim 17-16 lead but allowed the Bulldogs to open the fourth frame with a field goal and later record a touchdown with 8:21 remaining, giving them the 26-17 advantage.

A game-high toss of 40 yards from quarterback Darryl Overtstreet Jr. to Koda Gates-Bridges brought Upper Iowa within three (26-23) with one minute remaining in the contest. Despite the deep launch into the right corner of the end zone for UIU's third and final touchdown, there was not enough time to regain the lead after Truman State recovered the onside kick.

Overstreet totaled 280 yards on the night and tallied three touchdown passes. Mante Morrow was on the receiving end of the team's other two touchdowns with six receptions and collected 73 yards. Gates-Bridges led the Peacocks with 77 yards, followed by Cam Williams with 76.

RJ Wells led the team on the ground with 39 yards on 10 carries, trailed by Jayden Mitchell with 32 yards on 11 carries. TSU rushed for 234 total yards, while UIU accumulated 66.

The Peacocks were 4-5 on fourth-down conversions and 2-12 on third-down conversions.

Upper Iowa was the first to score as a 14-yard pitch from Overstreet to Morrow gave the home team a 7-0 lead with just under six minutes in the opening period. Truman State responded with a four-yard rushing touchdown with 1:26 remaining but were held at bay after Eddie Latanaskaus blocked their extra point.

Nathan Behne would notch a field goal early in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs added ten points to their total for the 16-10 upper hand heading into the locker room at halftime.

Morrow's second touchdown reception of the game came with five minutes to go in the third, putting the Peacocks ahead 17-16, but the Bulldogs would not be silenced. The purple and white converted a field goal to open the fourth quarter and a touchdown on a 25-yard reception at just over eight minutes on the game clock.

The Bulldogs held a 26-17 lead before UIU's last touchdown seven minutes later brought them within three (26-23) to conclude the game.

The Peacocks are back at Harms-Eischeid Stadium against William Jewell for Homecoming weekend on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
